Christian Mccaffrey is a more logical choice

McCaffrey would be an upgrade to Fozzy. I can't see us taking him at 8. He isn't big enough to be the focal point of a pro running attack. He is a willing blocker, but not a great blocker (but of course he can improve).  The team that drafts McCaffrey is going to have to be committed to keeping him in the flow of their offense on a consistent basis. I don't believe we're that team. But if he falls to 40, I'd consider him (even if we draft Fournette).

I love what he could bring, but I just don't see us drafting him top 10.  Do we need a ST boost?  Absolutely.  Do we need a "spark" player who can flip the field or score long TDs?  Again, absolutely!   At 8, we need a consistent contributor.  It's a heck of a risk kind of investment.

2nd Round, everyday, and twice on Sundays =)  He can nicely fill a niche, but while he's really good at what he does, is he truly head and shoulders better than anyone else in the draft?

Future?

There were a couple of articles the last couple of days that referenced Rivera talking about Stew in the future tense. That may not make you believe, and perhaps you shouldn't until he is extended, but Stew is still a complete back. He is a great blocker. I don't know if it makes sense to hand a rookie RB the starting job until he can at least halfway give you what Stew does in the blocking game. Moreover, spelling Stew will hopefully extend both backs' careers.

No need to rush. Let a new back earn his spot. Unlike some on here, I don't think Stew is going to give up his spot easily.

We need to get off taking a Tackle in round 1.  Robinson is not going to fix any portion of our offensive line that isn't already addressed.  We need a LT (which will be address in FA)

McCaffrey is probably not going to be our pick at 8.  If he is, I will lose all respect for DG.   If for some strange reason he drops to #40.  I would snatch him very quickly unless we take Fournette.

There's about 10 to 12 dynamic players in this draft. We're in a position to get one, why would we trade out of that?

This draft is deep at some positions, including RB, DE, and Safety (IMO)---all positions of need. Even if you're correct about the notion that there are 10-12 dynamic players in the draft, you shouldn't assume that they will all be taken in the first 10-12 picks. There is going to be a few "dynamic" players taken on day two. I'm too lazy to do the research, but if you don't believe me, you can do the research yourself. But, for argument's sake let me throw out the name Leveon Bell.

Six top 100 picks vs four!

With McCaffey you are getting a guy who is only a junior in college and he isn't close to how big he will be once he gets into an NFL regimen. He would likely put on 10-15 lbs with little drop off in speed. He won't start day 1 but then again neither did Butler or Thompson. Everyone wants a serious upgrade on offense and frankly this would be it. He could play running back and do that well and be awesome on screens and dumpoffs. He is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. If we take a safety in free agency don't be surprised if he is our pick. Just saying....

    • I said the conservative play calling was because Canales doesn't think we can win shootouts. Yes, I did say part of that was because of the young, inexperienced receivers and that the OL is better suited for run blocking. I should have also included Young as part of the reason as well but I was responding to the post concerning "young receivers" and Thielens' absence. I am not so enamored with Young that I think all his problems are simply because of the receivers. I do think they overpaid for him and he has not lived up to the cost. He has had his struggles, as does pretty much every rookie qb thrown into a bad situation. But I have seen enough good things to have hope that he continues to get better. The OP is just pointing out how his performance late in the games when the game is on the line is one of those good things.
    • I think it goes both ways  It could be they are used to pocket passers, not someone who constantly has to create throwing zones for himself with pocket movement  point being, whether it is Young or the receivers or the sun or the moon or the wind, can’t win in the nfl without the threat of a downfield attack
