I'd keep Philly and let him be the WR4 with some potential to be that slot guy if he shows the potential.

Go out and make DeSean Jackson our big splash in FA and let Ginn walk. Also bring in Luke Willson for TE2

No need to bring in a soon-to-be 31 year old Victor Cruz when you have Philly/Byrd for the slot/WR4

Roll with:

WR1: KB13

WR2: DJax

Slot: Funchess

TE1: Olsen

TE2: Willson

WR4: Brown/Byrd

Ikr why upgrade our phenomenally awesome slot receiving group that hasn't been impactful since Cotch.

I don't think I'll ever completely trust KB to be 100% and i'd really rather move on from KB&funch... I know I know INJURIES take time to come back from but he doesn't play his size most of the time. [emoji52] Plus didn't someone, that most of the drops came from KB and Ginn

Philly is a good route runner but honestly you don't need two of them.  Ginn or Brown.  I was adamant about keeping Brown because he was younger and a good route runner and clocked right behind Ginn.    We could save some money and Brown could develop more without Ginn in the way.  If we keep Ginn than let Brown walk.

If we sign Cruz I would maybe keep Byrd as a back up and let both walk.

You need multiple "speed" guys.

I feel Philly is the type of guy the Patriots will pick up as a FA and turn him into a 500 yard per season contributor.   We just don't have the right coaching to use him correctly.     I'm not a huge fan, but honestly I'm not sure of what mistakes should have took away touches last year for him.

If NE can make LaFell look decent, they can turn Philly into a frikkin super star! I agree that he is a decent player (not great, but decent), we just didn't have room for him because Ginn was playing better, and returning punts. If I had my way, I'd let him go, resign Gin to a team friendly (he can only play worth a damn here) deal for his veteran presence, and draft Switzer to take his place over the next 2 years.

If we can sign Cruz (and he's got anything left) or a legit slot WR as a FA, this plan might change.

Say what you want about Philly, but he knows how to get open.

And also, he's right, he doesn't have that many drops. Now the preseason is a different story, but it's just that, the preseason.

The KB return caused a lot of our WRs to get a reduction in playing time.

OL, Cam struggles, and Shula's scheming all had a huge part in why receivers behind KB, Ginn and Olsen were completely uninvolved. Philly was getting open this year but just didn't get the targets.

    • In my opinion Fitterer was probably right about not paying McCaffrey. Now not wanting to "pay RBs" in my opinion isn't something you want to set in stone, to me it all comes down to the individual.
    • Maybe I'm just not understanding, but everywhere that I have read says that signing bonuses go against the cap prorated by as much as five years. The following example uses Andrew Luck's rookie contract as an example. "Take Andrew Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Luck signed a four-year contract with the Colts worth $22.1 million and included a $14.5 million signing bonus. Rather than a $14.5 million cap hit in 2012, the Colts spread out his signing bonus over the life of his contract. The hit against the cap would be $3.625 million per year over four years instead of a direct cap hit of $14.5 million directly in 2012. This gave the Colts more leverage and cap flexibility in signing other players." https://www.the33rdteam.com/nfl-signing-bonuses-explained/ I don't know why some of you think that signing bonuses aren't counted against the cap over the length of the contract, but whatever.   "The bonus with a signing is usually the most garish aspect of a rookie contract. Bonus is the immediate cash players receive when they ink a deal. It factors into the cap, but only for the whole contract duration, in terms of salary cap calculations. In the case of Bryce Young’s $24.6 million signing bonus, that’s prorated to approximately $6.15 million per season over a four-year deal. This format allows teams to handle the cap and provides rookies with some short-term fiscal stability, which is important given the high injury risk in this league." https://collegefootballnetwork.com/how-rookie-contracts-work-in-the-nfl/ I understand how signing bonuses can be a useful tool in order to manage the cap, and as one of the article suggests, signing bonuses may become important if you have a tight cap, but the bill is always going to come due. I'm not necessarily referring to you Tuka, but it seems to me that others simply don't want to understand that fact which is why they're reacting to what I'm saying negatively. How odd. In any event, I have a better general understanding of why signing bonuses are used now, and it's generally to fit salaries under the cap. Surely players, whether they be rookies or not, love a signing bonus because they get a good portion of their money up front. This in turn gives them more security and probably amounts to tax benefits as well. I also understand why teams would not want to use signing bonuses, particularly for players or draftees who have a higher probability of being gone before a contract even ends.
