Free Agency Grabs: WR Charles Johnson - Was His Potential Hindered By Poor QB Play?

Appreciate all the time and effort put into this write up.

Later on I'll watch more of the videos.

But here's my thoughts on what I watched. He struggled to get separation on what little I saw except for the very first route in video.

And very sadly to say   it looked to  me his best separation came against US .

I can see your point, but I have to wonder if Bradford throwing forced him to get slower so the ball actually reaches him:

I'm just trying to equate the passer into the equation, which is why I'm getting a feeling CJ2 is capable of being a Ginn replacement. He got slower as the ball got near to him, which is where I believe the issue lies.

Could be wrong though, and it could be all CJ2's fault. I'm selecting plays that highlight his potential and weaknesses, but the source video is available for everyone to come to their conclusion.

@Saca312 Thanks for that indepth look at CJ2. I really didn't know what to make of the signing before and really didn't know the name. Gettleman has certainly been able to find some hidden gems before, perhaps this is another one.

It's only a one-year contract now, so I think at worst, we've got a short term issue. At best, we and the player could be the match we've been needing. A younger version of Ginn with better hands could be just the ticket.

We should know early in training camp.

Good work on this, though!

I don't need to prove anything, he does.

I appreciate what you're doing here with your breakdowns of our signings, but cherry picking a bunch of gifs to portray all of our FA signings as potential All-Pros honestly takes away from your credibility and cheapens your breakdowns.

Honestly, I think his odds of making the final roster are probably under 50%

I'm not saying they're all pros. In fact, I think CJ2 has a pretty low ceiling, and he'll just be used as a speedy deep-threat in the way Ginn was used. Not much of an upgrade other than a bit more reliability.

The purpose of this post was to show how he can act like a Ginn in our offense. Not to say he's going to be anything more whatsoever, and I certainly don't think so either.

Russell Shepard is different in how he has plenty of tools to be good, and that's what I like seeing. That's the one FA I'm excited about.

You won't get any argument from me on the poor QB play he had to endure. Bradford can't throw it over 20 yards

Excellent work Saca, thank you! Can you do one of these on Shepard as well?!

What I particularly loved was how much potential Shepard brings and the technicality in his routes with really less than a year of experience.

Given the chances, he stood out, and I think he'll explode with us and with him having an abundance of opportunities. Real excited about this kid and the potential he brings.

On most of those plays he was very well covered. Not sure if its lack of speed, bad route running, or lack of creativity by the offensive coordinator, but nothing really jumped out at me.

Hopefully he amounts to something in our offense, but if a shitty offensive line and an inaccurate QB was his undoing in Minnesota, he didn't exactly pick the best team to go to in free agency.

Very true. Forgot to mention he does have issues with cuts and solidifying routes. Takes a couple of steps before cutting. I don't think his ceiling is high in that area, but as a deep threat he's more than servicable.

Totally agree, not to mention these things can be coached.  You can't coach speed and he runs 4.3's.

I appreciate the effort.

But we as fans have been burned by reciever signings after placing high expectations. Think Dickson, and Underwood, prime examples.

Not saying he is going to end up that way, or that he won't be good, just that as fans, we have to learn to temper expectations. Which can be difficult of course, but time will tell.

Truth. History has shown us not to get hyped about anyone really until we see it first. Yet just about every year we still hype ourselves up and overrate our own players.

    • It is like when you go to da buffet at da Golden Corral and dey have all dis food and you get the same thing every time.   There is probably something you would like more, but you go to da same ol racks and get da same ol food every time.  Not sure why I am writing in trailer park dialect, but hey, watcha gonna dooo.
    • If we don't go OT, we will regret it.  What bothers me?  Are we going to get a starting-caliber OT at 19?  I think the draft is solid at OT, and the more I read up and watch video, the more I watch Lomu, the more I want him.   I see Freeling as a RT who needs some work in run blocking (since we need to run first, maybe not a good fit) and I see Proctor ending up as a Guard.  After Lomu (assuming Mouigia and fanu are gone), I think we wait until round 2.  In round 2, there are about 3-4 I like (Zuhn--good pass blocker and VERY underrated right now; Tiernan is a very good pass blocker as is Miller from Clemson, but both are not good in the run game.  Max Ixxxxx from Ariz St is impressive too---technically, there is not a of difference in these second tier guys--good in pass pro, need work in the run game.   If we wait until round 2 for an OT, we probably need to sign Nijman and start him early.   I almost think this is what we should do if Lomu is gone.  There is a big dropoff after him, imo, and I think we'd get better value if a stud ILB or edge is there.  Someone like TJ Parker Clemson makes sense. If Lomu is gone, trading back might be the play.
    • And what is x gunna help with except show him what not to do. Plus for the first year and a half he was just an obstacle
