Boston Globe-Panthers or Chiefs favorites for opener

It's bullshit. We seem to always be the team that's sitting there and people feel like they can fug over.

If we play them I hope we break Brady and toss them out. In 2015 we came in unexpectedly and were naive about true success, not believing people would try to intentionally hurt us. We were legitimately having fun for fun's sake. In 2016 we found out no one liked how pure we were and our upstart new brand of success was attacked by the officials, other teams, and the league. We were hurt and lost. In 2017 we should be battle hardened and awake to the reality that we can't trust anyone to do the fair/honest/right things for us. We need to take no prisoners and put our boots on their throats. No better way than to murder that franchise who always seems to win and get their way.

Jeff Howe has heard that the Patriots playing the Falcons to open the year isn’t a “sure thing” due to the complaints made by the Panthers last year.

Wow. So, Rivera complaining about the schedule last season is the reason the league will more than likely spare the Falcons of a rematch? SMH. This franchise can't seem to do anything for themselves. I bet we'll be opening against the Patriots. Oh well.

New England's home opponents in 2017 are the Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets and Los Angeles Chargers.

There aren't a ton of sexy matchups to choose from (sorry, Houston, you're out), so let's break out our top three choices:

1. Atlanta Falcons

After one of the most thrilling Super Bowl games in NFL history, we should get back-to-back NFL Kickoff rematch games. The Falcons boast reigning season MVP Matt Ryan, superstar receiver Julio Jones and a young, improving defense. The #Revenge factor for Atlanta will provide offseason narratives to fill the hours and hours of programming.

The Patriots overcame a 25-point deficit against the Falcons on Sunday. Opening the season with a rematch allows TV networks to put the Super Bowl LI highlights on loop all summer. The NFL loves marketing its biggest event during the down months.

This is the only realistic option for NFL Kickoff. Book your hotels now.

2. Kansas City Chiefs

The drop-off is steep in terms of provocative matchups for the Patriots to open the year. Coach Andy Reid's squad doesn't boast offensive firepower (or a sexy quarterback to market alongside Brady), but the back-to-back playoff contenders make for a good story after winning the AFC West. Assuming Eric Berry returns on a long-term deal, a stout K.C. defense could give Brady fits to start the year. The Chiefs also found a more explosive offense down the stretch of 2016, with Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill playing starring roles. A Patriots-Chiefs opener would kick off the season with a game that could have big implications for AFC playoff seeding.

3. Los Angeles Chargers

Since I've committed to providing a top three, the Chargers are the next best option among a pile of hollow sticks (really, I could have stopped after Atlanta). The NFL generally holds division matchups for the end of the season, so after wiping out the plebs of AFC East from consideration, Los Angeles sits as the best remaining option. The Chargers have star power with Joey Bosa and Philip Rivers. With new coach Anthony Lynn running the show, L.A. has the talent to contend for a playoff spot in 2017.

The NFL usually releases the full season schedule in mid-April.

This reporter names who he thinks should be the teams to open the season against the Patriots. Some of his points about the Chiefs are exactly why I doubt the NFL will have them open against the Patriots. Alex Smith isn't a marquee QB, so they will more than likely make the Panthers the opponent. I hope it does happen. BRING IT ON!

Isn't it rare anyway for the schedule to even set up a SB rematch? Our game was rare against Denver i believe.

Yeah - when you consider NFC and AFC opponents play every four years and alternate home venues....the teams not only have to be playing the following year but it also has to be at the SB winner's home stadium. So according to math - it's not common
