Lance Taylor (Panthers.com)

I will say that the amount of mentions that Lance Taylor has had this off season is telling.  The Panthers want some of that Stanford magic.  David Shaw has no desire to go to the NFL, so grabbing someone off the coaching tree...I wouldn't be surprised if Taylor ends up as a possible OC candidate down the road.

Lance was mentioned a lot in these draft articles. I tend to wonder if Shula fails to evolve the offense, will Taylor be our next OC? Hell, I'd argue that Lance is likely the guy we're listening moreso than Shula already.

I'll agree that he was definitely brought in to "evolve" our offense, and that he had a lot more influence in the off season/draft than you'd expect from a rookie WR coach. I doubt that he will take over OC anytime soon though, he doesn't have enough of a resume. I am absolutely stoked to see what we have up our sleeve offensively though.

I used to get annoyed with John Fox sipping water every 30 seconds during a conference, and I love me some GMan but damn that constant pounding on the desk like a gorilla~

I liked the one from last week when it looked like he was constantly applying hand sanitizer.

The articles are fine reading. I'm sure Lance will prove to be a great addition to the TEAM. They don't even begin the spell out what several are already suggesting in this thread.

Get with it felinehook.  He will be OC next week.

I don't think so. The amount of information and analysis that Gettleman got from Lance tells me that he may be brought in to be something more than just a position coach.

ESPN and The Charlotte Observer listed interesting quotes (especially on draft night) about Lance's involvement in the pre-draft process all the way through to the War Room. McCaffery was drafted because he listened to his pitch after all. Shula's name wasn't even mentioned. In addition, adding a versatile slot guy like Samuel was also Taylor's idea.

I think you are overblowing his influence. Lance said he tried very hard to be neutral and not oversell McCaffrey because he had a prior relationship with him. Sure he was wanting him but said Gettleman watched his video for the past 2 years and was sold on him as was the rest of the staff. This is Taylor's second time on our staff and he was brought in on Proehl recommendation. It wasn't because he came here to be more creative than Shula or take over and specifically develop him. He is here to develop all the wide receivers and this is his normal area of expertise. He noted when he came back here that coaching running backs was actually more of a stretch for him not wide receivers. He was a wide receiver in college and was the assistant wide receiver coach when he was here before

How Lance isnt OC by '18 should be what we're discussing. With how the draft played out and not going after any available TE targets O.J, Njoku, Barnidge etc might be the most telling sign the Gettleman is preparing to move on from Shula and his philosophy.

Ridiculous. We didn't draft any tight ends because we wanted McCaffrey and Curtis more and there were other guys with better value at other positions when we picked. The fact we went offense the first 3 picks suggests Gettleman is finally focusing on the offense and giving Cam and Shula some of the weapons we need. Obviously Gettleman thinks Shula can use who he brought in and isn't worried they were utility guys instead of tight ends. You guys spinning everything you can to cast Shula in a negative light are funny and pathetic at the same time. I can only imagine how unhappy you will all be when we again have a top 10 offense and Rivera and Shula get an extension.

Coaching staff took some hits this offseason.  Rivera tapping this guy just makes sense.  Is he NFL-quality outside of his special relationship with these two picks?  Possibly.  He seems to be laser-focused and is rising fast.

Shula's been asking for a #2 TE for at least 2+ seasons now. Gettleman literally upgraded every offensive position EXCEPT the one Shula's publicly made known that needs an upgrade. Yet here comes Lance and we draft 2 offensive players to HIS liking. I call BS here my manz.

Huddler here is the premise...

Taylors forte is evolving RB who posses an unorthodox skill set such as McCafferys and Samuel into high octane scoring machines!

Any thought to the idea that Shula hired Lance who was on our staff as an assistant wide receiver coach years ago. He went to the college ranks to hone his skills. Then we bring him back to help evolve the offense working with the wide receivers  after working with running backs in college. You make it sound like a competition between them without considering Shula hired him to help not compete. When we hired him I am sure the plan to go to a speedy utility back like we did twice in McCaffrey and Curtis was already in formation. It was Shulas idea not Taylor's. Don't be surprised if we attempt to upgrade at tight end since our plans in the draft were largely thwarted. Gettleman wanted a TE but goes BPA and the best tight end went off the board right before our pick in the middle to,later rounds. Wasn't Howard right behind Christian in the Panthers second tier?

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
