Voth: Proehl didn't really push receivers

Discussing the Kelvin Benjamin weight issue during an interview with Chris Kroeger on WFNZ, new Panthers.com writer Bill Voth stated that previous Panthers wide receiver coach Ricky Proehl tended to coach as a "teammate/father figure" type of coach and didn't necessarily push his charges as hard as some might expect.

Voth further stated one of the big questions for the upcoming season will be whether new receiver coach Lance Taylor continues that style or becomes more of a drill sergeant.

Surprised? Appalled? Amused?

I'm not surprised and Lance Taylor doesn't exactly strike me as a hard case either. Maybe Cotchery will fill that role.

Consider though, that Taylor is used to working with Christian McCaffrey, whose work ethic is said to be really good.

Would Taylor be okay with others not putting in as much effort as his star pupil?

Lance Taylor was McCaffrey's coach in college, McCaffrey was known as somewhat of a hardass on pushing oneself (and others) as a player, maybe that has something to do with his coach's style?

Bonus: Cotchery was a father figure too, maybe his presence allows Lance to be tougher while still keeping the players happy?

Would love @Jeremy Igo take on this as well.  I really liked Proehl but did seem he got just a little to soft the last few seasons and you could tell with some of these guys like KB and Funchess.  They both have it in them, they look damn good in camp from reports.  But just seem to need help lighting a fire under their azz.

Im still not familiar with the new coach and his personality

Not surprised at all. I'd been saying for awhile that I felt like most Panthers fans vastly overrated Proehl as a coach. No receiver we drafted noticeably improved under him. Also, he has a son playing WR at UNC. His previous "coaching experience" was exactly that - as a father figure, quite literally. I'm not so sure that his "retirement" was by choice.
