Kelvin Benjamin Got The Message. He's Working Extra Hard To Shed The Pounds

Don't worry. Put down the pitchforks.

Kelvin Benjamin will put down his own fork.

According to an article, Kelvin Benjamin has heard the jokes and comments. He knows he needs to shed the pounds, and is working extra hard at doing it.

At his point last week some Carolina Panthers fans were making fat jokes about wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin and wondering whether the team would exercise his fifth-year option.

The Panthers did pick up Benjamin’s option for 2018 – but not before making him wait until the last day to do so and having him endure some public shaming.

Whatever his motivation, Benjamin seems to have gotten the message.

Both days during the Panthers’ two-day rookie minicamp, Benjamin’s vehicle was parked outside Bank of America Stadium. Inside the stadium, Benjamin was presumably trying to shed a few of his extra pounds when few of his teammates were around.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Benjamin was at the stadium for extra treatment – not for an injury, but more for general fitness and well-being.

“He’s worked very hard when he’s been around. He’s done a great job,” Rivera said Saturday. “He comes in and gets the extra treatment, gets in the whirlpool, gets in the steam, sauna, stuff like that. He’s been great. He knows it, and he’s been what you would hope he would be.”

Benjamin’s latest weight struggle initially came to light when a local broadcast report put him at close to 280 pounds. Rivera said that wasn’t accurate, but conceded Benjamin had reported for offseason workouts “a little heavy.”

While not a stinging rebuke, the fact that Rivera acknowledged the situation at all seemed to be a public poke at his wideout. Rivera said at the time he was concerned about Benjamin, but pointed out he was working hard to lose the weight.

The 6-5 Benjamin is listed at 245 pounds, but his playing weight is closer to 250-252. Rivera has not said what Benjamin weighed in April at the start of the voluntary workout program, or what his current weight is.

Looks like Kelvin Benjamin will make sure he's in tip-top condition by the season start.

Great... if only he didn't need a message every off season.

Have an fsu buddy tell me jameis had to really get on kelvin a lot during his time there. He's not a self motivator. if he sheds the weight before the season and plays at a high level then whatever. But this will be a continuous thing with him.

Yep! I heard the same. As a Florida native, his weight was a big topic during his freshman and sophomore seasons. FSU sites would talk about it. He had a great season in his junior season because he actually had Jameis on his ass all off-season.

Cam has to grow up a tad more as a leader and get on him more like Jameis did. That said, 95% of the blame belongs to Benjamin. If he's not willing to put the work in, then I don't want him to get a contract extension. Kelvin at this point doesn't deserve anything.

You can't teach size... but you can't teach conviction, drive, motivation, etc either.

So now it's Cams fault? You guys are the worst. Sheesh

Eh he's a professional at this level. I'm sure Cam encourages him. Only so much Cam can do with how busy he is in the offseason. College is a little different. You're around each other more. It falls solely on Kelvin.

Can you stop being a whiny, overprotective poster? I didn't state anything not true.

When did I say it was Cam's fault? All I said was I wish Cam was more influential on his teammates. Cam busts his ass every off-season. The guy is always in shape and active. He's never overweight or being a lazy fug. Kelvin, however, admits he's a coach potato and hates to eat healthy.

Jameis kicked Benjamin's ass. Cam hasn't yet.

I'll stop being "whiny" when this board stops getting sore pussies over over anything that doesn't involve CMC or Luke. And "Cam needs to grow up" doesn't reflect your argument at all.

    • I don’t think we would spend that kind of money on a LB that can’t play all 3 downs. It said he played 331 coverage snaps last year and only gave up one TD so him not being a coverage LB seems kinda like BS?
    • Moton should be back in 27 just due to the guarantees. I can't see us cutting him and eating that cap hit. Trade might be a bit different, but how many teams trade for 20m tackles?  I wouldn't be surprised to see us take 2 this year, 1 in the first and one in the 4th that has potential to play inside if they don't develop as quickly. Our line is awfully thin atm with the unknown injury Hunt got during the postseason. Even if Hunt's ok, we still lack depth. I could see is walking away from this draft with 2 tackles and a center, especially if we move down to pick up an extra 3rd or 4th.
    • He was so up and down for 4 seasons. They declined his 5 year option for a reason  Oloukon has been their LB1.  Evero loves to send pressure so my guess is if Lloyd is going to be used a 3 down back here he’ll be blitzing on 3rd down a lot. Would’ve liked to have signed someone a lot quicker if that’s the case. Lloyd isn’t very explosive. Used to be
