It's easy to have so much respect for them now for trying to build around cam. The problem is this should have been done years ago. Cam is gkiing into his 7th season. Why it took so long is the question that needs to be answered.

We drafted a first and a 2nd round receiver in consecutive seasons.  That they were the best weapons after the fact is a legitimate debate but they did invest in young receivers

Very true, I just feel like going from drafting big possession receivers to help cam to Swiss arm knives is doing a complete 180.

I think it's rounding out the array of options. It's a positive not a negative.

Newton should be in his prime now with a feel for how to work with all of them

I think they realized their mistake in focusing too much on size over speed/quickness.  I think they also realized that Cam needs to be able to get rid of the ball quicker, and to do that, he needs playmakers closer to the LOS.  And the offense in general needed guys that can make something happen with the ball in their hands.

i wanted and even thought Dave would trade up for Fournette instead of drafting McCaffery at #8...it didn't happen i was WRONG

I still get a huge kick out of these threads. Read the whole thing just to watch a few people continue to poo all over themselves.

It was always going to be him - no matter how bad you don't want to believe it.

and i'm cool with that because ..the Panthers drafted McCaffery who happens to be one helluva a ball player also, and thats who i root for now;period.

At 8 and 40, we had a really good chance of getting both players. I still am not going to say that if Fournette fell to 8 that we would have passed on him, but I think we knew he wasn't going to be there. We certainly wouldn't have traded away Samuel and Moton to get Fournette. I also think with the Ealy trade, Gettleman made his point that even just that little move was big. We had draft capital to move up if we needed, but based on everything I recall seeing before the draft, 8 and 40 was more than enough to get both.

Yep.  While many scoffed at us only moving up a few spots for Ealy, that move likely landed us a future starting OT.  And New England lost out on the guy they wanted by dropping back those few spots.

Apparently, they really wanted Dan Feeney at 72 (originally our pick), but the Chargers took him one spot ahead of them at 71.  The Panthers, on the other hand, reportedly wanted Taylor Moton, and if we had stayed put, someone would have likely snatched him up before we would have had a chance to get him.

So, Gettleman was absolutely right, those few draft spots were gold to us.  And unless Ealy really turns it around there, they clearly lost that trade badly.  The move allowed us to get who we wanted, but they lost out on their guy.

And these quotes about offensive strategy regarding the short passing game came out after the draft as if they were asked not to disclose the interview yet.

I think they had some interest in Fournette but Mccaffery fit their thoughts about direction better.

    • The last 8 weeks, Nix had 2,022 yards, 21 TDs, 6 INTs on 70% completions While Bryce's last 8 games he had 1,709 yards, 12 TDs (albeit adding 5 more rushing), 3 INTs on 61% completions. I'm not going to pretend I watched those Broncos games to know exactly how Nix actually looked, but in retrospect, his statistics were better.  Hell, in just his final 8 games, Nix has only 5 less TD passes than Bryce has in his 30 game (28 starts) career. And you said he had better WRs than Bryce did, but I'm not even sure that's even true either. Sutton and Thielen might be completely different types of WRs, but I'd say they are pretty equal on effectiveness if not even a slight edge to Thielen (63.6 YPG for Sutton to 61.5 for Thielen).  Then XL and Coker vs Marvin Mims and Devaughn Vale, again, at worst a push, if not lean in our favor there too. Why is it so hard for some Panthers fans to just objectively look at our team/Bryce and be honest with themselves. ? He was significantly improved the final two months of the season from his first season and a half.  But he was still a below average QB during that time, even if he had a few good throws and clutch moments.
    • The Canes physically dominated 2 of the top 16 teams in the league this calendar month. If you truly believe Florida is just that much more physical than us, then what does that say about the rest of the league? Why didn't they go 82-0 this year, if they are orders of magnitude better than every other team?
