When the Panthers begin the third phase of organized team activities Tuesday - the phase that starts to resemble real football - they are expected to do so without offensive tackle Michael Oher.

While Oher still has not been cleared from the protocol, his absence is not solely related to the brain injury that sidelined him the final 13 games of last season, according to several sources.

They say Oher also has been dealing with personal matters that include but are not limited to the fallout from his April 14 altercation with an Uber driver in Nashville, Tenn., where Oher lives during the offseason.

Panthers officials seem to be willing to give Oher a wide berth to sort through his issues, although a source with knowledge of the situation says Oher is reportedly out of shape -- a development his mug shot that was released two weeks ago appeared to confirm.

June first is getting closer

We could cut him now and designate him as a post-June 1st cut. There's only $3M in dead cap on his contract anyway.

Ultimately, I think this situation is likely headed toward an injury settlement but we'll just have to see how it plays out.

Well this out of shape thing sure is a 180 from what was being said just a few weeks ago...

Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said Friday that Oher - despite not being officially cleared - is working out vigorously with the team.

"He looks great, he sounds great, but he's still in the protocol," Gettleman said, via Panthers.com. "He's working out five days a week. He's working his fanny off. He's doing NFL workouts. He's fully engaged in that weight room."

"He's doing NFL workouts. His workouts are not for the faint of heart," Gettleman said. "That's what I can tell you."

Me too, but geez, we need a backup LT bad. Williams can't play LT based on pre-season last year. I hope we are giving Moton and Williams enough snaps at LT or even Norwell. We just need to have a good backup plan in place. We've got Gradkowski or Larsen for C backup, Scott, Silatolu and Moton for G backups, Moton/Williams at RT. What we don't have is a backup LT. We could develop one or shift around, but I hope based on last year we at least make sure we are ready for it and practice the alternates.

This. Really don't want us in the same situation again where an injury at LT forces us to play musical chairs all across the OL, especially given Kalil's injury history.
