I know Smitty isn't realistic but the rest of the list is pretty good and in line with what we've been hearing.

Steve Smith, former Panthers wide receiver

What? OK, this is a complete long shot, but not one totally out of the Carolina blue given what John Elway has done and what John Lynch can do.

When it comes to knowledge of the game and its players, Smith has it and has shown it quickly in retirement as an NFL Network analyst. Owner Jerry Richardson has done crazier things ... like firing his GM right before training camp.

He's young, he has history with the team, he's helped put together a strong contender for the AFC South in Tennessee... I wouldn't hate it.

Tennessee has done a good job of building around Mariota as well.

Both tackle spots locked up for a long time  (Lewan/Conklin) and addressed both WR spots this offseason as well (Davis/Decker).

Both positions which we lack greatly in Tennessee has clearly stressed the importance of.

After reading nothing but the small blurb in the article on the subject, he is now my first choice as the future GM and I will be upset if we go another direction.

LOL.

Seriously, I think it would make for possibly the most interesting story, particularly Gruden. Either one could develop into one of the more dicisively master strokes in all of sports, or the most colossal train wreck. Riverboat Richardson!

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
