unverified report: gettleman cut steve smith because in 2013 he punched cam newton in the face twice in the locker room after practice

This story worries me. Clearly this tells us that JR's other "sons" - GO and TD - was indirectly the cause of DG's firing. Makes me think - Is Matt Kallil now a Panther with a lucrative contract just because RK also has "son" status, he lobbied JR, and DG was forced to open the wallet? To fulfill JR's romantic dream about the brothers playing on the same line? First I was stoked about the transfer, and us finaly getting set at LT for years to come - now I'm not so sure if the talent realy is there...Hope I'm wrong and MK will turn out to be the best LT we ever had.

And don't even get me started on Bersin why he is still arround.

I fully trust you Phil, and your judgement of the trustworthiness of others...  but this is hard to believe.

I love Smitty, and I love Cam.  That being said, did Smitty tell Cam to wait there a second so he could grab a step stool, come back, and then punch him in the face lol.  I dont think he could reach Cam's face without Cam overpowering him with sheer size and leverage.

And as much as I love Smitty, I was always under the impression that he only attacked guys when 1) they were "softer" than him, and 2) were in vulnerable positions where they didn't expect it and he had the upper hand.  Both Bright and Lucas were easy targets, not tough guys and actually considered "nice," and both were caught off-guard when Smitty punched them.  And additionally, neither was 6'5" 260 lbs., or the guy responsible for getting the ball to him.

It seems like an interesting story and also convenient to tell at this point in time in defense of Gettleman from people that know him.  Again, I think it's entirely possible, it just seems very unlikely.  I honestly don't know what to say about it if it was true...  I don't see Cam letting anyone physically punk him like that either.  My instinct is too deny it for the reasons I listed above...  I can't fathom it.

Smitty sucker punches people while they're sitting down.  He's just that kind of dude.

btw, we all know the mainstream media reads the huddle to get their hot takes from some of the more well versed and credible posters on this board only to subsequently create articles themselves like it's their own story coming from their own sources.

I give it 2 days before this rumor is on ESPN NFL insiders and other mainstream rumor outlets, and eventually, a rumor the whole world will come to know.

props @PhillyB you just unleashed a beast.

no one reads this site unless you're joe person or bill voth trying to come up with something juicy to meet a deadline. what they do follow is twitter.

that's why we have to get #suckerpunchsmitty trending right now if we want this to have any shot of gaining traction

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out why Getts got the boot.  I don't buy the TD and Olsen storyline.

Maybe JR told Getts he had to get the gang back together again for this season.  Peppers and Smith (and maybe Deangelo).  Getts contacts Pep and works out a deal but doesn't bother giving Smith a call.  Insubordination!  JR gets pissed and runs Getts.

I thought it was outside Getts' MO to sign Peppers - it felt forced.  But maybe he just had too much integrity and smarts to contact Smith.  And JR blew a gasket and made a rash decision.

Thoughts?

I couldn't even get to the meat of the story because of all this cheesy ass mystery thriller narration. the cigar smoke plumed from my cigar as i meandered through the logistics of this conundrum. Steve Smith you say? He scoffed with an air of dismissive petulance.

looks like someone missed out on the hardy boys as a kid

    • He didn't actually make the playoffs. We had several opportunities to clinch on our own and crapped the bed. We had to wait for Atlanta to win to get us in. We had the tie breaker in a poo division that had 3 teams finish 8-9.  If you go back and look at the games we played, we weren't a dominant offensive team under him as an OC. We beat the Jets 13-7 and barely beat the packers after they failed to convert multiple red zone trips. We relied heavily on converting 4th downs. DC was also extremely slow at recognizing trends in game and was really lacking with clock management.  Was there progress this year? Yes. But most of it was on the defensive side of the ball. Our offense was stagnant with a couple of exceptions. Any improvement from Bryce was minimal and he kept insisting on XL over Coker, and even RB distribution instead of going with the hot hand.  He may be building something, but I don't think we've seen enough to know what that is. It could go either direction. If he insists on being OC, then without a noticeable improvement, yes he needs to be on the hot seat like any OC would. The more jobs you take on the more you have to be judged on. I think he would have a longer leash if he hired a true OC and just focused in being HC.
    • zero percent suprised Luke is a nice guy irl, have never heard anything differently from anyone that's met him.  I have heard mixed reports on Smitty I know one guy on here got to know Deangelo Williams and J stew pretty well back in the day when they used to host events and he said they were nice iirc  I can't imagine Jordan gross is a bad hang, he's hilarious
    • Ran across this bit of fun. As seen on https://www.thesportinggent.com/blogs/dispatches/front-porch-musings-field-ethos-journal (a blog for outdoors gear and clothing)
