It's only dreaded on 3rd and long.

Given that 3rd and long is when defenses bring the most pressure it's not a coincidence that 3rd and long is when offenses call screen plays. It's not just the Panthers who will call screen plays on 3rd and long it's when any offense calls a screen play.

How was this a bad play-call?

You have to remember when this happened. It was late in the 4th with us up big. We were trying to run the clock out. On 3rd and long at this stage in the game, there is no reason to risk a throw downfield. Take an easy throw that keeps the clock running while also having the ball in your best playmaker's hands and hope for the best.

Shula isn't the best but there was nothing wrong with that call. It was fine within the circumstances. It was 3rd and long late in the 4th. Don't risk it. We're up 20.

Wasnt in the 4th. It was right before halftime. 40ish seconds left, no timeouts with a 7 point lead.

Personally have no issue with the play call. It works, well it did and we ended up getting 3 out of the drive.

If it doesnt then you force San Fran to take their last timeout and you punt the ball forcing them to go 60 yards for a FG in 30 seconds with no TO.

Pretty sure this was just before half and led to the FG
