Cam Newton's rushing yards per attempt has declined for 5 comsecutive years. Trend?

Okay, it has not been a dramatic drop off, and some will poo-poo the stat, but here it is:

2012: 5.8 ypc (career high)

2013: 5.3 ypc

2014: 5.2 ypc

2015: 4.8 ypc

2016: 4.0 ypc

2017: 3.3 ypc

I guess the big question is simply this: is the trend irreversible given Cam's mileage, running style and injury history?

The NFL evolved away from QB option oriented offenses eons ago. There was a reason. Are the chickens coming home to roost?

What's more concerning, is his lack of development the since the 2015 season.

I know, no oline last year, plus shoulder surgery.

I'm just not concerned about his rushing yards at this point in his career.

i've mentioned it multiple times over the last few seasons...the panthers have been content riding newton's raw natural talent and not concerned with developing his skills.

the decline in rushing production has always been inevitable.

The Panthers are doing to Newton what the Redskins did to RG3.  We have slowly tried to turn him into something he is not.  Cam is a Favre like gunslinger who enjoys running the football.  Take the risks with the rewards and let him be him.

and every couple years we nerf downfield throwing threats.

i agree. Said when we drafted him.  You aren't going to get a Manning type career in terms of longevity. But let Cam be Cam.  Don't draft him if you aren't cool with that.

I think it is note worthy.

Might also be teams keying in on taking his running away with their defense, forcing him to throw more.

You don't think it has something to do with Cam largely deployed as a short yardage and redzone runner the past couple seasons? Outside of those called runs, the current the last few years  almost refuses to leave the pocket unless it gets extremely crazy.

If Cam would tuck it run on pass plays as much as he did early on I feel his ypc would be healthy on the stat sheet.

Defenses learning how to counter Cam and an offense that has failed to evolved and protect Cam.

I wish the data was because Cam has developed as a passer and is not relying on his feet as much, but sadly that it not the case.

I personally don't care if the trend reverses, I care that we protect Cam and have a productive offense.

    • Jalen Carter came into camp out of shape too. That was part of the reason he dropped considering he was thought of as the better defensive player pre-draft activities. It’s not a good sign when you don’t look great but it’s definitely premature.
    • We won 5 with the worst defense in the history of defenses.  I think free agency and our draft puts us over 6.5.
    • Leaning towards just ordering this tonight, but now I have no idea on size. Has anyone bought a bunch of jerseys in the last few years and can convey how the Game vs Limited vs Reebok versions all fit? These are both Mediums... The white one here is a Reebok one from 2010, and was when they had the "+2 length" on the tag and it was the version with the stitched numbers instead of iron on... the blue one is from 2022 and is the F.U.S.E Limited version also with stitched stuff, not the "game jersey" with the ironed on numbers/letters that they have the T-Mac jerseys in. The old one fits me fine, the blue one was always a tad snug on me, particularly in the shoulders I'm leaning going with a Large based on the CMC, but for all I know, that is made with a tighter cut due to the higher "limited" level and the "game" ones they have for T-Mac are cut more like a T-Shirt and thus will fit more like the old white one I have here, not sure. (and yes, I already tried going to a sporting goods store here to hopefully try on a Lions jersey to see, but they don't have any right now)
