How Much Of A Difference Will Ryan Kalil Make In The Run Game? (Pretty Big)

Seems not a lot of people are talking about this, but getting back Ryan Kalil will be huge, according to Matt Harmon. While people do like to point out how his communication will drastically improve everything, I'm surprised more are not talking about how his impact as a run blocker will help out tremendously.

Here's a look at his analysis of the Panthers run game:

If there's one silver lining for Carolina, it's that they can point to a key factor as the root cause to their issues: the absence of star center Ryan Kalil from Week 2 on. The Next Gen Stats confirm Kalil is a difference-maker; the team's running backs averaged 0.18 yards before defenders closed within a yard in Week 1 and -0.45 in every game since.

Sure, some may try and point to that being a low sample size, but considering it was the first game with two new tackles, it still is pretty shocking to see how drastically performance changed without Kalil.

Thoughts?

Ryan is the reason why Norwell and Trai operate as well as they do. Your center has to be the jack of all trades lineman for a reason. He's gotta be able to handle that nose by himself in certain situations, he's gotta be able to pass block and know who to pick up and who to slide over if both A gaps are coming, he's gotta be able to chip and go to backer, and he HAS to be able to communicate all of this with both guards before the snap. Whether that is verbal, gesturing, or even just an unspoken understanding. Larsen isn't a bad player, he just lacks the experience. Trai and Norwell know and understand Ryan Kalil. A lot of the failures in the run game as far as blocking is concerned have to do with the center and guards, and it's because the understanding of who is doing what is lost at times. Couple that with Larsen just not being the same level of player that Ryan is, you get what we have.

Getting Ryan back will not fix Matt Kalil's inability to be consistent in his game. Only coaching will do that. Him letting his feet die, him not attacking, that's on him and the coaches for not correcting him. So while we will see more fluidity in the interior, our edges will remain a question mark until such time as Matt Kalil is something other than "the lesser Kalil".

Unless they get back to 3 point stances for run blocking not as much.

According to Moose.

3 point stance is important for power off the snap, but fundamentals are breaking down either way. For as much as everybody loves Matsko, something isn't clicking with this line that he is responsible for. Either they're failing to heed his coaching or he's failing to coach them. One of the two.

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
