Importance of a good RB

Hey all, so i was watching colin cowherd show and he made a good point that we are seeing the need and emergence for good running backs. I think he said the stat was the top 4 RB's are 23-10. I started thinking why the shift from the recent past. Because i do remember rb's use to be plug in play and for the most part dime a dozen besides the top couple rb's. Then it hit me, with decrease in oline talent the elite rb's are beginning to stand out even more. Will be interesting to see what we draft next year. Do we go Rb in the 3rd to help compliment cmc or do we try in free agency. Lot of mid tier rb's were signed last year who ust to be starters for teams. Thoughts?

I think everything goes in cycles. As defenses have evolved to be more concerned with stopping the passing game as offenses have become more and make pass happy, many if them are now more vulnerable to the run.

The death of the RB position was grossly overstated. Turns out, we just went a few years where there weren't any who were considered legit elite prospects and unlike positions like QB most teams won't reach out of desperation on a RB.

We just drafted one top 10 please don't spend any more real resources on it. Maybe one in the 4th/5th or later, but not before that.

I feel like there is some deja vu here... as if we drafted two running backs in the first round within two years of each other....  don't recall if that worked out ;)

It started the death spiral of trading the next year's 1st rounder that ended up seeing Hurney get shown the door, so yeah I guess that's a plus?

I think he's 100% right on this.

The rise of spread, largely pass -oriented college offenses coupled with rule changes to open up the passing game has transformed NFL football.

Not surprisingly, NFL yards per carry have increased in recent years.

Meanwhile, real NFL QB material is becoming harder and harder to come by...

Hurney did not get fired until 2012... The pick we traded ended up being the 28th pick the next year. That pick was Eric Wood.

Alos, that trade wasn't for another RB... it was for Jeff Otah. Who was a monster until the unpredictable injury bug.

Maybe I am not understanding your argument... but overall this was a good decision by Hurney.

To bad Carolina doesn't trade for a top pick RB like Chubb or another on same level but that does not always go well. Hopefully JR/Hurnia don't waste on a pick that is not a need and not go for a RB.

I'm not seeing it, maybe I need to watch more. But if Cook went in the 2nd last year, why would we trade. I wouldn't lose sleep if anybody else got him truthfully
