PFF: Carolina's Run Game Struggled For Most Of The Season Because Shula Literally Crapped The Bed On How To Use CMC & Stewart

An interesting take from PFF. Apparently, it seems his lack of production could in fact be traced to scheme.

They say if this were the 2016 running scheme, CMC would have far better production than he is now.

The 2017 NFL draft’s eighth overall pick ranks only 30th in elusive rating (35.7) among the 49 NFL running backs with 55 or more attempts this season. Fueling his low rating, he has averaged just 2.04 yards after contact per carry (47th) and forced just 11 missed tackles on the ground (T-33rd).

Conversely, the version of McCaffrey that took the field for Stanford just a year ago could do no wrong. Among draft-eligible running backs last season, he ranked within the top-20 in elusive rating (73.8), yards after contact per attempt (3.39) and forced missed tackles on the ground (44

With Stanford in 2016, McCaffrey carried the ball on either a counter or power run concept on 51 percent of his 253 carries in 2016. With Carolina, only 27.5 percent of his carries have come on power/counter concepts.

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey

Additionally, McCaffrey has carried the ball on power/counter concepts from the traditional tailback position behind a quarterback under center on just six of his 69 carries (8.7 percent) this season, while 27 percent of his carries were of such nature at Stanford.

...

However, given the Panthers’ approach to the ground game in 2016, one would have thought the McCaffrey-Carolina pairing was a match made in heaven.

The Panthers’ four-headed monster in Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert, Cameron Artis-Payne and Fozzy Whitaker ran either the power or counter concept on roughly 41 percent of their carries last season. Now, Carolina’s top two backs (Stewart & McCaffrey) have run power/counter just 27 percent of the time, a difference of 14 percent between the two years. McCaffrey was a perfect match for the 2016 Panthers offense, but the 2017 iteration has shifted away from that scheme.

As expected, the transition away from following pulling offensive linemen and tight ends to more zone concepts has had a negative effect on both McCaffrey and Stewart’s ability to find any running room in 2017.

Something to think about.

Shocking! No but seriously I still want Shula gone. I have since he's gotten here and I still believe he's terrible at his job. Honestly I don't think my opinion of him will change till I see a ability to adjust.

I still want him gone because I already know he is holding this offense back. This offense would be absolutely LETHAL with a competent OC. Think Eagles offense on steroids (yes, that good). I've said this for a while, this team would be an absolute juggernaut with a coaching staff worth a damn.

    • agree to disagree you are entitled to that opinion even though I find the argument completely bizarre based on data. I could type out a long paragraph discussing those areas but what’s the point. I posted a screenshot that showed Bryce in a similar post snap situation with a free rusher in his face which resulted in a TD - that’s what happened on the play so I posted it.
    • I've already addressed this notion in a previous reply. You are basing your assertion outside reality if you think Bryce would have not only been more successful but defeated the Patriots in place of Herbert. Bryce got blown off the field by that Patriots team with the highest paid OL in the league. We've seen Bryce with an OL that gave up 65 sacks and it resulted in the #1 pick. And that is not a defense of Herbert or arguing he is a great QB in any way. He has physical talent but he has been similar to Darnold early in his career in terms of his very up and down perfomances. However that does not change the fact that they have significantly less invested in the OL than the Panthers.
    • I think Tepper has been setting the stage where pending there is no miracle he wipes it all clean.  Think you already have been told that with small things like Evero staying.  Bryce is the guy next year.  OC, DC, everything stays the same.  QB room largely the same.  Nothing would really matter there.  They basically get one more shot and it goes how the schedule paired with our 27th ranked O predictably most likely goes.  Everyone out the door together.  Bryce is a bridge tier QB.  I don’t see Dave surviving where he could be bridge QB here in reality.
