One of the biggest mistakes people tend to make when they're analyzing rookie players is assuming that who they are in the first few games is who they're always going to be. That's all too often untrue.

You have plenty of guys who start off like a house on fire but then tail off over time (Kareem Hunt, for example) and other guys who start slowly but steadily improve.

Of course, in the sports talk atmosphere where everybody wants to be able to say they were the first one that called it, nobody's patient enough to actually wait and see what happens.
