It's funny how on the huddle JR has gone from a possibly senile old man barely in touch with reality to becoming some sort of real world Supreme Leader Snoke from Star Wars that manipulates and forces everyone to do his bidding including hard ass ego driven men like Gettleman.

Yeah he meddled, and I'm glad he is gone, but don't absolve others of their roles too. They weren't just taking orders every step of the way.

I think JR only get in the way at certain points. I watched the whole Steve Smith drama go down, Peppers left at one point, Gross had issues, J.No had his issues and JR didn't meddle in any of that. When it came down to Olsen and Davis, he said enough is enough. Just like at one point where we've had multiple losing seasons, he said enough is enough from Marty

That whole he wanted Shula in there I'm calling bullshit. JR old ass wasn't getting involved in those decisions. Ronald Rivera made the choice to hire Shula and promote Dorsey. Ronald Rivera made the choice to keep Shula AFTER the SB and AFTER the season AFTER the SB

I don't think JR meddled too terribly much until after his heart surgery.  There was a definite shift in contracts that were handed out and the approach to the draft, which all also could have been influenced by the lockout.  I have no problems with the decisions Hurney made prior to 2009, and since he's been back I think he's done a fair job.

How do you know it was Hurney who fired Shula

It wasn't.

I'm told that while Ron Rivera and interim GM Marty Hurney kept lines of communication with each other re. Shula open (like they do all things), this was ultimately Rivera's decision to make, and he didn't want to make it emotionally the day after wild card loss.

*Extends Trai Turner, Olsen, and Davis

*Fires Shula

Fire Shula = happy dance

Now, lets see how he handles contracts and IF he screws up  cap space again....

Marty Hurney seems to have learned from his own mistakes while not quite having the Gettleman hubris about him.

Everyone doesn't get a second chance in this business. At this point, with new ownership coming in, having a guy like Marty at the helm who knows the personnel and culture is better for continuity.

Hurney is going to let the defense rot.  Huddlers probably get their wish as he chases free agent WRs at the expensive of the defensive line and secondary, but the elite defense that Gettleman built is going to disappear.

That elite defense with standout players like Butler, Worley, Bradberry (all drafted by Getty)? Pretty sure we could replace all 3 of those players with traffic cones and wouldn't see any dropoff on the defense....

The elite defense you speak is already gone. The Panthers were 18th in the NFL in pass yards allowed, 22nd in pass TDs allowed. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2017/opp.htm

The leftover Gettleman jockstrap sniffers can't give Hurney even a smidge of credit for this even though this goes against just about everything we've seen from Ron the last few years. If you think Rivera stormed into Hurney's office and demanded Shula be fired right then and there you are living in a fantasy world.

I think Ron had a hand in it for sure, but it was likely for his own self preservation. If we had managed to beat the Saints, Shula would likely still be here another year at least. The playoff loss warmed Ron's seat.
