This won’t happen, but if it did.....

If the Saints were as dumb as some of their fans, and they released Marcus Williams. Would you back our front office if we went after him?

I know it was a terrible play, at the worst time, on one of the biggest platforms in the NFL. The play was inexcusable. Yet, he has played well all year and he played well for the other 59 minutes and 45 seconds.

Just curious what you guys would think.

Even though he's a Saint I honestly feel bad for the young man. He's a good player, he's a rookie, and he blew what could ultimately prove to be the biggest play of his career. Snatched defeat right out of the jaws of victory.

He faced it like a man.

nothing but respect for him.

More than I can say for some of their fans and some of the people who attacked him on social media.

Yup. Hearing how he broke down and cried, and then having to face the media with puffy eyes. Big ups to that guy, not many people could do that.

Guys, I know it’s not gonna happen. I know it would be incredibly stupid, I stated that already. I just seen a million posts trashing him and some joking about fans wanting to cut him and I laughed at it.

Just after seeing the relentless assault on this man, I wondered how our fans felt about him.

Also, Brown and Bell didn’t “lose” the game for Pittsburg. Marcus, as literally as you could put it, lost this game with that one play. Kids gotta be eating up inside. First year and could be remembered this way forever. Sucks.

Bell likely isn't going anywhere, though it sounds like they have a nasty fight on their hands if they franchise tag him.

I wouldn't be terribly shocked if they parted ways with Mike Mitchell though. He and Bell both embarrassed themselves guaranteeing they'd be in the AFC Championship game, but Mitchell is far more expendable.

After watching the video again I think part of the reason he whiffed was he became indecisive on which Viking the ball was intended for.  They were so close together than maybe just for a moment he thought the other receiver was going to catch it.

It is the only reason I can really think of how he missed him so badly.

That said, you don't cut a quality player for a mistake.   Williams will have to live with that play for the rest of his life.  Nothing can change that.   He'll never miss a sure tackle again.

Who knows but I think the two most likely possibilities are that he was going for a table top type hit and just misread it or that he was trying to avoid a penalty.

    • Me and you clearly have different definitions of production. If you remove the 2023 season where Thielen had just over 1k yards he is 43rd on our all time receivers list just ahead of Jonathan Mingo. And before you ask why would we remove that season? Well a couple reasons. For one thing we won a whopping 2 games. And for the biggest. Thielen was 14th in targets in 2023. We absolutely force fed him the ball all season and finished with the 32nd passing offense. For comparison sake 33 year old Jerricho Cotchery eclipsed over 1k total yards in just 2 more games and with 67 less targets than Thielen did in that 2023 season. He has above average hands. That's it. We overpaid him because we were desperate and overvalued him. That's the reality no matter how many times you or anyone else wants to quote me and get defensive about it.
    • He's played great and it was a win-win (rare free agent) for both parties.  One of the points is he hasn't made enough difference to "waste" 35 million on. Another point is by the time Panthers are hitting their prime, he would have taken snaps away from young WRs/TEs/RBs. "Thus" in the long term, hurting the teams new future "window."  But I dare think of the monkey poo of a offense the Panthers had without him the past 2 years. Lack of talent leads to many problems, including paying a 35 year old to be somewhat respectable. Hes one of few that cared enough and made a effort. Plus you know he's done great stuff in many other ways for the team, community juggernaut, leadership, etc.  Judgement is for AT and his 3 year panther career!!
    • But it has gotten a little wacky. RBs-https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/contracts/_/position/rb     A couple months ago iggles made Bark the highest guaranteed RB, jeanty was until then. That's what matters the guarantee. A rookie never played a down was the leader, until iggles howie made things right.  If a safety gets drafted in the top 8 or so, he would have the highest money too or very close to it.    Add in TEs and C too.    Even with the fixed %, the numbers are getting too much for a player that's not proven themselves.     Plus anytime a QB is drafted it screws up the contracts for players around and if next year a punter gets drafted at the same 90th spot, they want the same contract with the 5.7% increase. Teams would be laughing.    Its just reached this point. Another 10 years and I bet the vets will be crying.
