Only thing I can think of is Hoke was doing good things at San Diego State while Rivera was coaching with the Chargers. Maybe Rivera noticed or they crossed paths somewhere.

Someone else said that too. Makes as much sense as anything, I suppose.

Rivera branching out some isn't really a bad thing.

I actually really like this move.  Hoke was once considered one of the brightest minds in college.  He's fallen on some hard moves, but I still think he knows the position he used to coach.  Also, I think this might be a sign that we're gonna target some young DE's in the draft because he's worked with college age and level guys his entire career, so this could help ease their transition to the NFL game.

Buckner has no hope of ever doing anything with the Panthers as long as anyone currently employed at BOA is still employed there.

He can come back to FNZ and "do whatever you gotta do to get the job done", but he has burnt bridges both public and private.

Because of prior comments about the team or something more?

Also, I don't necessarily want position coaches and coordinators who are "HC material". I want guys who are good at their current job and who want to do their current job-- not just talented guys who are dreaming of their next step. Coaching turnover isn't fun and maybe this guy is a great DL coach and that's all he needs to be.

I'm actually a fan of hiring guys who have been promoted then demoted.

On the one hand, it shows that it's some point they were good enough at what they do to merit promotion.

On the other, since those promotions didn't work out, many decide to stick with what they do best.

He did a good job dropping his Michigan DL recruits into the NFL draft the last couple years

After Lance Taylor brought McCaffery with him, I'd be starting to look at players Hoke coached at Tennessee this last season as potential Panthers.  Kahlil McKenzie jumps out because of Star's potential departure.

I'm wondering if we're bringing in a college guy because we're going to make a push towards a youth movement along the D-Line and a guy with more college experience might be able to teach the younger guys like Hall and rookies TBD moving forward.

Just my 2 cents. Don't really care either way.

The DLine at UT largely regressed under Hoke. Johnathan Kongbo and Khalil McKenzie, two 5-stars, didn’t play close to their potentials. Maybe some of that can be attributed to Botch Jones, but I was not impressed with Hoke’s body of work at UT. Definitely a questionable hire.
