Well, Gantt is saying someone's screwed

I don't know, but it seems like a lot of new GMs come in after the end of the season and right before the draft. Every time a GM gets fired (okay, almost every time -- Gettleman is the outlier here), it's at the end of the regular season or the playoffs.

I would imagine that each team that interviews candidates asks as one of their biggest questions: What would your draft plans be for us? They want to know what that person's philosophy is, how it can apply to their team and how well the person plans to work with their scouting department. And if they don't plan to work with the scouts on hand, do they have their own team ready to sweep in and make the necessary judgement calls.

Good candidates would have this already laid out and tweaked for each team they would be interviewing with. Ones that weren't prepared shouldn't get hired.

I think Gantt is just doing his guy-liner wearing best to make a fire here simply because that's his nature. I think Hurney probably doesn't stand much of a chance of being hired on permanently for a whole host of reasons.

JR's team only asks how the candidate's visit is going and if they are in favor of casual Fridays.

A lot of front office people also get fired shortly after the draft, though it's more common to see that happen to scouts and such than GMs.

It would seem pretty clear that the timing on this is off because the team never actually intended to interview anyone else unless or until they had to.  When the Pollard Alliance apparently forced their hand, they set up a sham process designed to clear the final hurdle.  But then this story threw a monkey wrench into that.

What really makes me shake my head is that they actually seem to believe people can't see through the facade.  Nearly everybody knows the search was fake, but apparently the Panthers think people will believe whatever they tell them.

They seem to have no self-awareness at all...or a clue.

Gantt knows that any decision is a short term one designed to bridge the gap between now and when the new owners take over and pick their guy. So as I told everyone last week before all this blew up. Hurney is already 3/4 of the way through the process of free agency and the draft. Bringing in someone new to start over or learn on the job makes little sense particularly when any current decision  is going to be undone by the new owners. The decision should be who helps the most right now for this free agency period and draft.  Hurney is the best candidate this late in the process. I just wonder why they didn't keep the interim tag and if needed give him a 6 month or year contract extension if it takes longer  to find a new owner.

The worse thing we can do is bring in someone new who has no experience as a GM who feels the need to quickly change everything at this late date because he knows that he could be out of a job in 6-12 months and needs to put his stamp on things quickly. That is a set-up and will result in a football nightmare. I could handle a PR nightmare much better than a football nightmare which is likely given the time and pressure concerns a new GM would be inherently under.

Dave Gettleman was hired by the Panthers on January 10th. Suck it up, get a great candidate and hire them. What is one month in the grand scheme of things? You could set the board and have a group of five year olds play pin the tail on the donkey. There's a good chance the draft will go as well as last years.

If they won’t let him back, I don’t see why ron can handle the draft. He knows what players we will want, heck it’s his team. I wouldn’t expect any trades by us during the draft though.

Heard a radio interview with a veteran NFL GM some years back...

He personally hated whenever head coaches got involved in the scouting process. Why? Because he said coaches had an unfortunate tendency to fall in love with a particular player off of a highlight reel whereas scouts were trained to look at the whole picture.
