This is really not that complicated.

Perhaps it'll help you to think of a two act performance.

During Act One, Hurney was a terrible GM. Guys who get GM jobs but lose them pretty frequently get other personnel jobs. No one else even wanted to hire him as a scout or consultant. The reason: He isn't qualified, but Jerry and is known to give people jobs they aren't qualified for as a reward for loyalty. Hurney is generally considered Richardson's most loyal employee, so no surprise.

All of those things still hold true regarding Hurney's first go as a GM. It's also true that he wasn't any more qualified to be hired this time, but again, Richardson.

Thus, here beginneth Act Two.

The curtain has only just gone up on Act Two.  So far, the dialogue and action have not provided sufficient detail to tell how good this performance will be. Those of us who saw a terrible Act One aren't expecting much from Act Two, but we can certainly hope for improvement.

The end of Act Two is about a year or so away, so there's plenty of time for things to go great or things to go sour.

But nothing definitive has happened yet, so we're waiting.

As I said, not that complicated.

Two things:

1.  Too many overall predictions of doom about Act Two have already been made based upon Act One from detractors for them to be taken at their word that they are hoping for the best, because hoping for the best doesn't include such constant dripping of negativity.

2. Act Two could end this May, or May a decade from now.  We don't know when or how it will end.

I don't really think I should have to explain the idea of hoping for the best while expecting the worst. Again, not complicated.

Hurney failing means the Panthers losing. Nobody wants to see any more of that. We've seen it enough. It's why we didn't want Hurney back, but he's here, and until new ownership dumps him (if they choose to) that's where we are.

I'm not really sure what you feel qualifies you to speak for or interpret my "true feelings" or anyone else's, but here you are making a concerted effort to do just that. I can guarantee you it would be a lot easier to simply let all of us speak for ourselves.

If that's too much to ask, I can't help you.

One last metaphor...well, more of an allegory.

Let's say the Panthers one day announced that they've cut Cam Newton and signed back Jimmy Clausen.

Is your first reaction "Well, maybe this could work" or "OMG!!! WHYYYYY???!!"

The Panthers further announce that before making Clausen the permanent starter, they're going to work out a few free agents. Kirk Cousins, Jimmy Garoppolo and Sam Bradford all get tryouts, but in the end, Clausen is named the starter and the others are let go.

You realize it's not gonna change, so all you can do is hope for the best, even though you're expecting the worst. I mean hey, it's not like every pass Clausen ever threw was terrible right? Maybe he's somehow managed to get better.

The season is still a ways off, so I  guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Faith in Clausen based on what you know from before? Not much. But willing to hope he succeeds because the Panthers season depends on it?  Well, that you can manage.

And thus, here we are...

PS: If your first response to this is along the lines of "OMG How dare you compare Dave Gettleman to Cam Newton" or some such, you pretty much don't get it.

You have spoken plenty on Hurney,  at just about every turn.  No interpretation needed.

Perhaps.

What I can't second guess is that Butker is eight years younger than Gano and will cost around 4.5 to 5 million less in salary for similar results.

There's no real way to put a positive spin on that.

In all fairness, we don’t know what kind of career Butker will have.  I wish we would have kept him for sure, but to say that he would consistently have the same result as last season may be a stretch.  Plenty of kickers have put together a good season here and there and wound up out of the league a couple years later.

Mr. Scot, at some point you're gonna need to come up for air. You've had your head firmly up Hurney's ass for the past month.

well...Hurney is used to having a hand up his ass.

Maybe Pinocchio can be a real boy for one season...

Lmao ok now I know for fact you're delusional. A more apt comparison would use Matt Kalil and Byron Bell. Neither are good and we should hope for and expect better.
