Rivera acknowledges"all in" approach to this season

Rivera knows things can change quickly with a new owner

Quote

Rivera knows that when they take the field this fall, they’re auditioning for a new boss who has no vested interest in them personally.

Asked if that forced the Panthers into an all-in mindset this year, he acknowledged the elephant in the room.

“Absolutely it does,” Rivera said. “That’s what we have to do, we have to understand that we have to go out and show we’re very capable at what we do and that we can continue to have sustained success. We have to be on top of our game. It does add a little bit of pressure, but that’s the nature of the game. It really is a one year at a time as far as whether you get next year.

“We’ll approach it that way. We’ve been under pressure before and we’ve had to prove it and come out and produce and that’s where we are.”

While that doesn’t necessarily translate into a coming spending spree in free agency (they have around $27 million in cap space after ditching three veteran starters this week), Rivera said the reality that they can’t afford to miss this offseason is even more tangible than other years.

“I think what it does, as far as how we handle it, there’s a sense of ‘Hey, we have to get it right,'” he said.

Buckle your seat belts.

Gee, one would think an "all-in approach" is called for each and every season.

Otherwise, you're simply admitting that something less than 100% effort is the norm and is acceptable.

I took it as they think the window is now and they need to not think about the future as much as winning the Superbowl for the 2018 season. I don't know how I feel about this approach but will wait to see on the moves we make before passing judgement.

Last time we had an all-in approach we had a losing season.  Just saying...  we had a horrible FA and draft.  Forgot which year it was. I think it’s when we drafted Everette Brown in 2nd and gave away our 1st.  Hurney was our GM back then...  thank God he is no longer our.... oh wait.

Also read from his presser that they don't know if they view Funchess as a #1 or #2 wr and that their primary focus this off-season is to get a wr and build on the position. We need to get Cam a playmaker and tell gettlemans little bitch Shepherd to hit the door!!!!

These quotes are a microcosm of what makes Ron such an average head coach.

"I could be fired, so I better really make this year count."

It's the same thing that birthed "Riverboat Ron". A sense of urgency to win should be an innate characteristic in a head coach, not something that pops up every few years when your job is on the line.

I thought we traded Benjamin specifically to make Funchess the number one.

Now we're not sure?

I like the trade because of Benjamin's knee but I don't think Funchess is number either. We need someone that is a playmaker and the number no questions asked. I don't think u can say that with Funchess.

We all know once you get in the playoffs it's anybody's guess. We know with a healthy Cam, the Panthers will most likely make the playoffs. Heck looked at our offense from this past year and we had a chance. Now if we can add a few pieces who knows what kind of damage we can do.

My main point is that with TD, R.Kalil and possibly Pep all retiring then it makes sense to put all our eggs in one basket. I am not saying we should give up future 1sts or sign any long term deals, but a few higher priced short term deal I could see us doing.

My feeling is that Star tests the market and realizes that the market isn't that strong for his position and we get him back on a pretty good deal. We unfortunately franchise Gano but we are stuck because we need a good kicker. Those combined will be around $10m. We then sign a WR for about $10M and have another surprise or two for $10m.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
