A-Rob, Watkins? Not likely. The money is looking just too funny

It's all nice and great to think about making a realistic run at a top free agent wide receiver, but if I had to bet on it, I would say it's a pipe dream of the highest order.  Sure,  some of you want to take what Voth says about it as being "actually realistic" and make it more than it is,  but the fact is that with our budget and holes,  it's actually unrealistic. Unless Marty basically says "fug it and let the chips fall where they may," I can't see us making a serious push.  

Tim Weaver of USA Today points to the cold hard truth.

 

"...With $157 million in salaries already used up for 2018, this leaves the team with $23 million in cap room. Subtract $7-8 million for the rookie contracts and that leaves approximately $15 million to play around with for next season."

 

"Having potentially less than $15 million to utilize for this year, it seems unlikely the team will go after a notable free agent receiver such as Jacksonville’s Allen Robinson or the Rams’ Sammy Watkins, unless the Panthers make a move such as releasing Ryan Kalil or Russell Shepard. As in years past with Dave Gettleman, it’s likely the team opts to fill holes with cheap veterans like Mike Adams, who was signed last year to fill out the strong safety position."

Now you know that we want Pep back, and there is the rumor that we want to upgrade the backup QB position. Where do y'all think that all this money is coming from? 

It's kind of ironic that people essentially want Hurney to make it rain when that's what got him fired the first time.  Some are even suggesting that he's going to go all-in because he is under some imaginary gun of a new owner that has yet to be named.  I just don't believe that Hurney is going to throw caution to the wind and neglect fiscal responsibility.  Now what I do think is that he may decide to make a go of it, having faith that he can deal with whatever weaknesses that exist (or continue to exist) via a strong draft,  and a strong belief that development of younger pieces already on the roster may have to suffice.  I mean,  we'll still have KK,  Addison and our linebackers to hopefully stop outrageous bleeding,  and that maybe with the addition of a Robinson or Watkins will simply help us to overpower people offensively.  But, really,  I just can't see him doing that.  

He may not have to go to Dollar Tree,  but it's looking like finding values at Walmart is definitely in order.

Easy answer: Backloaded contracts. Hurt us in the future, maybe help us this year. Hurney did it his first go around here.

yes perhaps but have you considered mortgaging long term viability for marginal short term gains?

A new owner---a sharp one---likely has an eagle eye on that as well.  It may be the absolute quickest way for Marty to be axed

I don't remember what thread maybe one of the Gano ones but it was posted in there we had around 23 million after the Gano contract and that already took into account money for rookies. Why is the exact cap space always so difficult to figure out?

FA hasn't even started and people are already saying what FA's are unlikely. This fanbase can be depressing at times. At least let the first few days of FA play out. Lets see if we can secure a meeting with one of the top WR's. If Hurney shows them a plan, maybe we can get them for a little less than what the Bears/49ers/Browns/Colts can offer.

For me,  being realistic here is not being depressing, it's just being real and in touch with reality. 

I'd still be pleased with Donte Moncrief, Jeremy Maclin,  Mike Wallace,  Paul Richardson,  Marquise Lee,  and whoever else.  

Set your expectations in fitting with reality and be contented with that,  and then if something more happens, be ecstatic.

Oh im not talking about me. Im speaking for others who believe we have a realistic shot at getting a top WR. It's not unrealistic as you say. If teams like the Saints/Falcons can continue to get talent with little cap space, why can't we?

Im all for Mike Wallace, but why not aim higher?

 

All im saying is don't say something is unrealistic until the process starts. Give us a chance to get one of these guys in a meeting. Believe it or not, Cam Newton is going to be a huge selling point to these top WR's. Cam is the best of the bunch considering what teams need WR's Jimmy G is good, but he doesn't have a long resume of being great. Luck/Tribuski/Browns #1 Qb is not competing with Cam Newton.
