Is Ryan Kalil still safe?

Ryan would be crazy to go for that. Once he retires, the Panthers could come after him for that remaining unearned bonus money. I don't think Hurney would if that's the agreement they made, but there's no guarantee that Hurney will still be the GM.

It doesn't affect Ryan whatsoever, only the team's cap hit in the future. Teams do this ALL THE TIME. Actually it would help Ryan because he gets all the money up front as a signing bonus rather than getting game checks during the season.

Eagles have done this with several players already due to their cap situation this season. Seems like they're going all in now while they still have Wentz on his rookie deal because when it comes time to pay him they're going to be in a dire cap situation.

And it also seems like we're going all in as evidenced by signing Bree and Poe this early in FA, as well as with the total uncertainty in the front office when new ownership takes over. There's a huge sense of urgency and making this move with Kalil would help us this season and hurt us later on. I bet we do this.

Panthers could convert all but $1.015M of Ryan Kalil $4.5M base salary into signing bonus along with his $1.5M 3rd day of league year roster bonus while adding 4 dummy/voidable years to create $3.988M of cap room. There would be $3.988M of dead money in 2019 when Kalil retires.

Will hurt us in the long run but easy to clear space for this season.

He should be offered a pay cut--you get the Peppers' deal. $5m.  take it or we release you.

I'd love for that to happen. Doubt it does though. Large majority of players would never ever consider the notion of a straight up pay cut. We can restructure without it hurting Kalil easily.

If he retires, the Panthers can absolutely come after any unearned bonus money in his contract and there's not guarantee that Hurney will be here and they wouldn't do that. Now ownership, likely new management, possible new GM? That wouldn't be a gamble I'd take if I was Ryan.

The bonus money would all be earned this year. It's a signing bonus and the voidable years make it count towards the cap hit but after this year there is no contract so there's nothing for him to "not earn."

You don't understand. Even though it's already been paid out doesn't mean it's already been "earned". The signing bonus money is paid out essentially as an in good faith agreement that the player will fulfill his contract. In the even that the player retires before his contract expires, the team can absolutely come after the player to recoup that signing bonus money designated for future years and negate the salary cap impacts. Here's an ESPN article talking about just that:

http://www.espn.com/blog/green-bay-packers/post/_/id/41703/retirement-could-be-costly-17-15-million-costly-for-martellus-bennett

Bennett would leave behind $12.95 million not including the $4.2 million in prorated signing bonus money the Packers could try to collect. In all, Bennett could be out $17.15 million if he retires after this season.

Voided years on a contract work differently and serve only as a purpose to let the team spread out a player's cap hit. Ryan's contract would be voided and end after this year. He'd have played out the entire contract and there'd be nothing for him to have not earned by retiring.

Kalil is one of my favorite players but he’s played 14 combined games the last two years. He played 6 games last year and we were in the playoffs and won 11 games. He makes us a better team.

But if there are cap savings to be had with that kind of time missed I would be shocked at all if they told him they were gonna make a change. Again...when healthy I think he’s the best in the league and makes our offense way better. But it’s questionable at this point if he can stay healthy.

I think if you have a chance to upgrade safety or WR, and you need to cut Kalil because he won't restructure or something, you do it.

I think he may be OK with it, not like he'll lose money.

But you can't hold up getting better for a guy that probably plays half the games this year, honestly.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
