Derrius Guice may have lied about Combine questions

Keep in mind that part of the reason why we have a good locker room is that we tend to avoid guys who could screw it up.

That's also fair.

I just value Guice's talent highly. I personally feel he's the best pure runningback in this class and I'd be hard-pressed to pass it up in the second round.

First round? Yeah, I'd pass. Second? I'd definitely be considering him despite the flags.

Care to elaborate?

Well, it's all based on opinion anyways, but I just don't believe he is going to be as prolific as Barkley, Michel, or Chubb. I mean, I don't believe that he has the power or the hands of any of these guys. I'm going on record right now and saying that Penny will become the much better value in round 3 or 4 than Guide will in round 1 or 2 in retrospect after their first three seasons.

That's part of the problem.

It's pretty well-known that Jeff Ireland asked Dez Bryant if his mom was a prostitute a few years ago. There was a huge dust up that followed and Ireland got in plenty of trouble with the league over it.

Nobody's gonna so that again. Thus, claiming that somebody asked you that same thing seems like a pretty obvious lie, and not an especially smart move.

So if you have a guy who's willing to lie and potentially cause other people to get in trouble to bring attention and sympathy to himself in this situation, what makes you think he wouldn't do the same thing if he were on your team and say, not getting as many reps as he wanted?

This story says "maturity issues", "not all that bright", "poor judgment" and "possible problem child / locker room troublemaker" to me. It would very definitely cause me to think twice about him.

So you’re willing to give Jeff Ireland and the other team executives the benefit of the doubt that they would have learned their lesson and never ask those kinds of questions again, but not do so for Guice and suggest that he very well may do the same kind of thing and become a problem?

That’s a good point.

I don’t know this kid but I tend to lean toward he’s telling the truth. I personally don’t have an issue with the questions and could easily see some douche asking them, even if in an indirect way.

Have you heard him speak?? He doesn't come off being too bright. With that said, he's still the most powerful runner in this class.

Have you ever heard Frank Gore speak? I’m not even trying to be mean but I’d be surprised if he isn’t operating at a child’s mental level. He’s still one of the best RBs of his generation.

Ireland was a dumbass and isn't a GM anymore. Someone floated the idea of bringing him here a while back. I wasn't on board, even with the knowledge that he helped the Saints have their great draft last year.

As to the other teams, the only report I've seen out of this year's Combine was this one. It sparked an NFL investigation that now is coming to the conclusion that it didn't happen. So yeah, they seem to have learned...at least for now. That's not to say some idiot won't ask a dumbass question in the future, but as long as the Panthers aren't the ones that do it, that's no big deal to us.

And yes, a guy pulling a stunt like this says "immature" to me. There are definitely things that Guice can do to change that perception, but we'll have to see what happens next.

And it's not like he's the only good running back in the draft.

Maybe it should be a red flag.  But this kind of thing doesn't bother me the way a a bad/violent temper or issues with drug and alcohol abuse would.  Its easier to grow out of being a drama hound than a violent person.

Valid. It's not the same kind of red flag as something like that.

The story of thing doesn't necessarily say "undraftable", but it does say "immature". The question then becomes just how big of a red flag is "immature" to you?

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
