Possible delay in the team sale

He's got that right, though.

There's nothing stopping him from choosing Navarro. Only possible monkey wrench I could see there is if the league told him they wouldn't approve, and that seems highly unlikely.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I don't think they want to allow Navarro in.

If JR is being forced to accept a lesser bid then he should hold out. I don’t see how it behooves the NFL for a sale to happen 2-300m under value. Navarro isn’t that dirty of a guy and if the nfl is using Tepper to inflate budding then that’s collusion.

Its a a complicated process and Navarro certainly has other investors. For all we know obscure investors or deal points could hold up the process. Tepper is probably sitting back letting the Navarro deal fall apart either through his NFL contacts or Navarros own group.

Deals 1/100th this size fall apart for the silliest reasons.  It’s All speculation without hard facts which are certainly used behind NDAs.

I've had pretty much zero emotion throughout this process. It's never mattered to me who won as long as they were a good owner.

I will say now though that if this ends with Navarro getting screwed over and the NFL handing it to Tepper for a lower price, that'll really suck.

Wouldn't stop cheering for the team over it, but that's bulls--t.

There was an article I haven't seen mentioned regarding current owners and whether they would chose to stay on board. It seemed to contradict the full sale concept or at least make it a more complex process. It's possible these details are being worked out. I tend not to buy in to the high drama angle. It's possible but so far it's complete conjecture for the sake of floating possibilities.

Related: Richardson's son Mark says he supports Navarro.

Mark Richardson picks a favorite among potential Panthers owners

The son of Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson says he can’t imagine a better choice to buy the NFL franchise than Charleston businessman Ben Navarro.

Mark Richardson, a former team president who is part of the ownership group, met Navarro several months ago and came away impressed with the billionaire who is one of four people known to have bid on the Panthers.

“I’m sure there are multiple people that could be the right next owner. I personally know Ben and I know what he stands for,” Richardson told the Observer on Tuesday. “I know where his heart and his head is, and what his commitments are. And I can’t imagine a better person being the next owner than him.”

Mark Richardson said he has not spoken to his father or any of the brokers on Navarro’s behalf, although he has had conversations with Navarro about the sale process. The ultimate decision on the sale is up to Jerry Richardson.

Mark Richardson said he would consider remaining with the Panthers as a limited partner if Navarro wins the bid.

“I would give serious consideration if he were the next owner and if he wanted me to continue to be involved,” Richardson said in a phone interview.

Richardson said it would make sense for Navarro to have some of the current partners “roll their interest” over and remain part of the ownership team.

“That’s cash he (Navarro) doesn’t have to come up with,” Richardson said. “So the more people that would agree to stay, the less money he would have to come up with or the less of a limited partner group he has to put together.”

Navarro is believed to have bid $2.6 billion, The New York Times has reported, which would be a record for a U.S. sports franchise. Sources close to the confidential sale process have said Jerry Richardson is expected to pick a winner in the coming weeks, and a vote by NFL team owners could come at the league’s May 21-23 meeting in Atlanta.

“I know people who have worked with him in multiple different areas and everybody always says the same thing about him, and it’s all positives,” Richardson said. “He’s a people person. He’s low-key, not a lot of people know him. He flies under the radar.”

Navarro, whose father is a former head coach at Ivy League schools Princeton and Columbia, is said to like the open-air aspect of Bank of America Stadium and its in-town location.

That’s another plus for Navarro where Mark Richardson is concerned. He helped pick the stadium site 25 years ago after reviewing 80 locations.

Quote

Mark Richardson was asked whether Navarro is the type of person his father would want buying the team.

“I think he would be the type of guy that everybody in the Carolinas would like the team to be sold to,” he said.

“I’m a fan of his and I’m a fan of what he stands for and how he does things. He’s committed to the right things for the right reasons.

“I think he’d be a wonderful owner.”

For the record, everyone I've ever talked to who had any experience working with or close to Mark Richardson couldn't stand him.  People loved his brother Jon, but thought Mark was an a--hole. So no, I wouldn't really want him to remain part of the team.

Gantt’s deeper, sinister view on the delay could very well be playing out. Or, not. If so, hey, that’s how it goes. This was never an ideal set of transitional circumstances. I’m actually very pleased about the top two candidates. Could have been a good deal worse.

That said, Gantt has a knack for the dramatic, so I’d put a filter on his reporting.

If Jerry publicly says, “I’m keepin’ my team, kiss my taint”, then, yes, that would be classic, and tragic.

I totally believe the collusion part. NFL is a society of billionaires, they are going to try and manipulate the situation so that they can only allow who they want. Puff Daddy could come in with an offer twice of what they are trying to get out of tepper and the NFL boys club would do everything in their power to not let him in.

All Rapoport is reporting here is that “things are moving along”. His source says it’s at least two weeks away.

Gantt initially believed it'd be done before the draft, but also said that Richardson was being grouchy about the process and wasn't gonna be forced into anything.  He said Richardson was gonna do things "his way" right up till the bitter end.

So yeah, looks like he could be right.

Apparently, Michael Rubin picked up Meek Mill from prison, to take him to the Sixers game.

The mention of Rubin is funny.  In nearly every article about the sale, the Observer cuts and pastes this exact paragraph (especially the final sentence).

Navarro is one of four bidders identified by the Observer. The others are steel company CEO Alan Kestenbaum; e-commerce entrepreneur Michael Rubin; and hedge fund manager David Tepper. Bloomberg has reported that Rubin dropped out when bids exceeded $2.5 billion, but a source has told the Observer that he remains interested at the right price.

Thanks to @Palmetto for posting this in the other thread.

Maybe not quite a done deal for Navarro, after all.

Final push for Tepper, perhaps? Jerry Richardson being a jerk?  Hard to say, but regardless it looks like we might have to wait a little longer for the final decision.

(I know some folks aren't gonna want to hear that)

Called it. JR don’t want to let go and he’s going to try every trick in the book.

Hope not, but yeah it's a real possibility.

He'll lose, of course, and it'll be ugly, but Richardson vs The NFL always had the potential to be an ugly divorce.

If that's the way it is, so be it.  Just hope Navarro (by most accounts a genuine good guy) doesn't get screwed over in the process.
