Carolina Panthers Select LB Andre Smith UNC

Coming off an excellent sophomore season, Smith looked to become of the top linebackers in all of college football in 2017. He started the first two games of the year, racking up 21 tackles and an interception, but suffered a season-ending knee injury against Louisville in week two. Despite that, Smith decided he would move on to the next level instead of risking another injury in college. Scouts were impressed with his 2016 play, where he started 12 of 13 games played, compiling 113 tackles, six for loss, and three pass breakups. Smith was a top-20 inside linebacker recruit out of Florida when arriving at UNC, and appeared in all 14 games as a reserve at Sam and Mike (53 tackles, two for loss, one interception, one forced fumble).

In a way this is a relief, this is solidifying that Hurney won't be back next year.

The one year gap of lost talent is nothing compared to getting a competent GM.

This is yet another Hurney staple checked off for those who were counting. "Scrappy local kid to try and win favor with fans."

Smith was a very, very good player for Carolina when he played. He missed pretty much all of last season with about 23 other unc players.  Was shocked he declared early and def should have stayed for another season. Good value though for 7th round.

    • Bryce and Dave will determine how many games this team wins next year. It’s not on the WRs. The RBs. LBs. This is about 2 things: 1. Can Bryce continue to come up big in the few key downs that decide most games?  2. Can Canales evolve his play calling to counter punch like the big boys do. Half time adjustments.  teams that score 30+ points on the regular win more games than not. That’s on Bryce and Dave. The offense is top 10 at every position group, save for TE and QB. A baller TE is gravy but not crucial when the receivers are dudes.  The defense is the defense. It’ll be better this season, hopefully by a large margin, but Dave/Bryce is really where it’s at.
    • Normally I'd wholeheartedly agree with this. But I feel like teams figured out this offense after the Raiders game. Bryce was so inept the first 2 games that we couldn't really even run the offense. Dalton's first game showed what we had. But after that game, coverages got a lot tighter and windows were smaller. When Bryce came back in, his ability to extend plays made a big difference. It's really difficult to stop a QB that can beat/escape 1on1 tacklers. It puts a lot of pressure on the defense when you blitz. And he was completing throws in tight coverage with anticipation. Point being Bryce wasn't throwing to wide open receivers that were schemed open by the offense. Occasionally yes. But not often.
    • With the additions we've made to our roster combined with the state of the division and the conference as a whole there is no excuse for this team not to make a legitimate push for 8-9 wins. Anything less is honestly inexcusable. There will be no more free passes for being a doormat in this iteration of the league where even mediocre teams are competing for playoff spots.
