The worst kept secret in sports is the worst kept.

Anyways, David Tepper already has his plans for how he wants Carolina to function. He envisions an organization mirrored like the Steelers.

Like or dislike? Discuss.

I like it--we never seemed to have a philosophy.  Pittsburgh is (historically) not afraid to walk away from a player wanting a new contract but, statistically, at the end of his elite status.  The Steelers build an offensive line, get a good QB, a good RB, and they usually are pretty solid at WR.  Defensively, they like to pressure the passer.

Not so different, really.  However, they do not hold onto players too long.  Look at Barry Foster, Kevin Greene, etc.  Marty has these emotional attachments to players because he wants so badly to be valid.   Ryan Kalil is the perfect example. Was he approached about a reduced salary?  Did they ever  consider cutting him?   Is he worth $700K per game when he has played 14 games in 2 years?

Yep. They put a very heavy emphasis on good drafting because that allows them to let players walk without having to pay huge contracts. They just turn to the next man up.

If they Implement that approach here, there probably are going to be some people who won't be too happy.

the "steelers way" is a dated form of building a team..

It is concerning if you think of the last 30 years.  There was a time they had one of the lowest payrolls and were still good.  However, disciplined drafting and smart contracts is, I think, what he means....we shall see.

No, they won't be. But they have to realize that if you can keep 10-12 starters/key contributors on the roster on first contracts, you can selectively  spend money.  I look at what Seattle did a few years back when they paid the defense crazy money because they had not won a Super Bowl in 40 years or so.  What would they have done in Pittsburgh?  Not that, I assure you.

It is all PR, he can call it whatever he wants.   Our success rests on Cam, how the rookie class performs and getting a good DB coach.  The guy at the top can indulge in fantasies but football games are won by players and coaches, so the main call is whether he keeps current staff or whether he gets some of his own people later on.

You have to wonder if the "not setting the market on free agents" is a reference to Hurney. He has been accused of overpaying before.

Maybe but in recent years there have been much more obvious and blatant examples.

The Steelers have had 3 coaches since the 1970's.  That's continuity.  Knox (god rest his soul), Landry, Shula, and a couple others were with their team for many years and won Super Bowls.  I would say though we haven't won the Super Bowl yet it is important to have someone competent at the helm.  While many dislike Rivera for numerous reasons he is a solid coach.

Every time a team changes a coach everything changes.  Offensive Style, Defensive style.  This requires certain players.   If you are constantly switching coaching staff you are never going to reach the Super Bowl.

Being smart with player contracts and not being held hostage to them is smart business.

If you are going to model your franchise against any franchise in the NFL.  You can't argue too much over Pittsburgh.

Good post.  I wonder what Tepper thinks of Rivera if he wanted Tomlin fired?
