SI.com - Carolina Panthers Open Camp in Search of Offensive Complement to Last Season's Dominant Defense

SPARTANBURG, S.C.—“Let’s go motherf------!”

It’s 9:36 a.m. and Thomas Davis is at the center of a small, bouncing huddle of linebackers, shoving or headbutting anyone willing to get close enough.

A few hundred fans within an earshot buzz from a moderately sloped grass hill that looks down on the sun-fried turf at Wofford College. Home of the Terriers. Individual periods are starting after a rotating group of warm-up exercises that move in stunning fluidity. An airhorn blows and, 40 seconds later, a new phase begins. The first inside run installation in full pads is minutes away, and soon a few of those linebackers will get their first live licks at the offensive line, and second-year running back Christian McCaffrey.

This is the good part of being head coach Ron Rivera. Familiar, veteran voices to fire up the team and young stars that provide hope for the near future. A practice schedule that has tightened with eight years of experience and wastes little time.

Good, sure, but the 2013 and, to a lesser degree if only because of the leads they were working with, 2015 defenses were dominant. I don't feel like last year's team was near that level.

Last years defense was terrible in terms of pass coverage , either middling or bottom tier in every pass coverage stat iirc and hard to watch them too.

The overall defense numbers got skewed by our front 7 and i think their numbers plunged after we started to get roasted through the air in the latter part of the year from playing divisional matches.

I wonder if DT read this:

"Wofford is a beautiful campus and may be home to one of the most convenient and fan-friendly training camps I’ve seen. Massive amounts of parking on an otherwise empty college campus give way to a large, open-hill space where fans can bring chairs and blankets to set up for the afternoon. It beats the feel of some camps where the fan experience can seem more like a sweaty cattle call, where fans are cramped and unable to see their favorite players far off in the distance."

If Wofford is deep-sixed, perhaps Tepper will give genuine, legitimate consideration to a relaxed, spacious atmosphere where fans can see and interact with the players.

Preach.  Been down to Wofford once. Loved the atmosphere.

    • Seriously? A CB who missed all that time on his rookie deal and was also a top 10 pick when the guys picked right before and after have been studs. A RB our GMs tried to replace with FAs and 2nd rounders and two backup level players is one of the best drafts we’ve ever had? I’d argue that the 2011/2012 drafts were better even with just Cam and Luke/Norman. Here’s the drafts I think were better: 2017, maybe 2018, 2015, 2013, 2011, 2012, 2008, 2007, 2001, 2002 (just Pepp) I’m hoping 2025 is way better as well. Honestly, we’ve kind of sucked at drafting overall and that’s the only reason you can even remotely call Horn, Hubbard, Tremble and BC a good draft let alone one of our best ever. Good teams that draft well would laugh at that as a great draft. If you want to look at say the 2023 Lions draft, you’d get 4 stud/above average/average starters not just 3 replaceable starters/backups and a top 10 pick that missed half his games. That’s a draft that helps turn a team into a playoff team. Our record since our 2021 draft is 19-49. A best ever draft doesn’t go 19-49.
    • I remember when football was great.    Wasn't this century.
    • Bingo. You can't pay that type of player elite franchise QB money. That average starter type player can excel when he's surrounded by top shelf talent in a great offensive system but pay him elite QB money and you're going to really struggle to surround him with the type of talent you need to carry him. You pay those elite franchise QBs because they can carry your roster. You can't pay guys who have to be carried. Bryce showed glimpses down the stretch last year. I really hope he keeps building on that. But before we back up the Brinks truck he needs to show that he's the type of QB who can lift up and carry the offense because when you pay those guys that's what they're gonna have to do.
