I think you're right. Out of necessity some much more talented people will be cut because we are desperate at OL. The good thing is I think it will only nominally affect our depth in those areas (mainly on offense).

They have to be paying close attention to OL cuts....and by they I mean norv looking for guys that will fit what he wants from the OL.

I think our two 7th rounders were a DT and LB:

I think DT  Norton gets put on t he PS if he clears waivers.

I think LB  Andre Smith also will either be put on PS, or possibly redshirted on the IR given his hamstring injury.

5th round LB Jermaine Carter is making the 53, I'm pretty certain

You are right...not sure why I thought we grabbed two LB's at the end.

And yea, I think Carter is a lock.

So we can’t cut amini?

I think we CAN.

Personally I tend to think we SHOULD, if Van Roten and Mahon look plausible as LG and depth at G. (The harder question might be depth at T... could depend on Daryl's prognosis).

Very much doubt that we WILL, however.

My issue is amini isn’t even good tackle depth either so we’re better of looking outside but I guess we will see where the chips fall..

Would we keep barner over cap? I'd rather have Byrd running back kicks

I would knowing we could probably safely stash Hood on the PS. If Anderson got hurt we could activate Hood from the PS to still have a powerback on the roster. If we kept CAP as the #3, then there wouldn't be an opportunity on the current roster for another scatback type. Plus, Barner has special teams value. He's pretty much the only RB on the roster who does and that's probably the only way the #3 RB gets a jersey on game day if history is any indication.

At first, I'm agreeing with you. Then I'm thinking that Barner could be more durable. Both are good guys to have on the team, but there isn't room for both and possibly no room for either.

This is going to be an interesting couple of preseason games for those who really pay attention to the second and third stringers. Good performances from either could get them a spot on this team, or another. Solid talent ahead of them and hungry young players behind them.

Another way to look at it is to start with the  game day active 46.

Last year we were pretty consistent on the layout of our active roster at these spots.

Offense (21)

  • 2 QB's
  • 3 RB'S (up to 4)
  • 5 WR'S (as low as 4)
  • 8 0-LINEMAN
  • **2 T.E'S, 1 FB or 3 te's no fb. ( we promoted Armah to the active roster once greg went down and rolled with 2 tight ends)
  • **3 T.E's 0 FB'S (When Greg was healthy we rolled with 3 tight ends and deactivated Armah again

Defense (22)

  • 8 d-lineman, almost always 4 DT's and 4 DE's. Butler was inactive one week and we rolled with 5 DE's and 3 DT's
  • 6 LB'S
  • 4 CB'S
  • 4 Safeties

3 specialist

Just using the format we previously used I could see week 1 going like this:

  • QB: Cam, Heinicke or Gilbert
  • O-line: Moton,Van Roten, Kalil, Turner, Sirles, Larsen,Mahon, Clausell
  • RB: CMC, CJ,  Barner
  • FB: Armah
  • WR: Funch, Smith, Moore, Wright, Samuel
  • TE: Olsen, Thomas

Of course I'd imagine Mahon, Clausell will be bumped off the list when Kalil and Williams return. This is where it gets dicey for Amini, I don't see him being active ahead of Van Roten, Larsen or even Sirles.

  • DE: Peppers, Addison, Horton, ?? I can't decide who should get the 4th spot at this point. I'd say Haynes but I think we prefer this spot go to someone who can play DT as well if needed.
  • DT: Short,Poe, Love, Butler
  • LB: Luke, Shaq,Carter, Jacobs, Mayo, Norris (Obviously TD will bump someone off this list when he returns)
    • CB: Bradberry, Jackson, Captain, and ??? Typically the 4th spot goes to an outside corner. I'll go with Doss for now

add in the 3 specialist and thats 46 right there.

Now to fill the final 7 inactive spots.

If we continue that trend on defense that frees up 3 more spots to keep at an even 25. I'd add in a 5th DE, Corn and Seymour.

Then on offense you can add back in 4. Kalil and Williams are grabbing 2 of those spots. I'd also imagine if Amini is healthy enough he would bump Mahon off the roster as well. Leaving 2 more free spots on offense and the most likely candidates being Byrd and Manhertz.

All that being said, I think keeping extra offensive lineman endangers  the spot of 6th WR and 6th corner.
