Is there a scenario in which we get to keep Byrd?

Who's ahead of Byrd returning kicks?

Moore's looked bad at returns in games.

I agree Byrd's position is a bit shaky, but it's really hard to imagine only keeping 5 WR when we had such a position crisis last year.

Barner

You can absolutely keep Byrd or anyone  else on the bubble you think won't make it thru waivers.

In order to sneak someone onto the 53, all Hurney has to do is cut Torrey Smith for a day. He has 0 dead money tied to him which makes this possible. That frees up a spot for someone on the bubble to make the team. Once Williams is IR-designated to return, that opens up a spot on the 53 where you re-sign Smith to the same deal he has now.

Smith wouldn’t clear waivers

I'm not sure Smith would be eligible for waivers. I could be wrong about how it works, but I think he's been in the league too long; he's played too many games/seasons. If he were to be cut, he'd immediately become an unrestricted free agent.

But there's got to be some other receiver-needy teams with more cap space than the Panthers, and if we cut him, they'd likely offer him a deal worth more than 5 mil that would be too good to pass up.

I just posted kickoff and punt return stats in my preseason stats review thread.

Barner and Byrd are pretty much the only 2 guys... I have to hope his 22+ yards/ return on kickoffs (3 returns) and 30 yard punt return win Byrd a spot.

Moore has looked awful. It's too risky to put Samuel our there.  Even if Byrd is inactive some weeks, just keep him on the roster for cheap depth.

This.

Unfortunately the only way it looks Byrd could stay is if we get rid of Smith, which circles around to that ongoing argument to should get cut him after his disappointing preseason thus far.

If we get rid of Byrd who is our return guy?  Moore hasnt looked like he's resdy for that, Samuel hasnt seen too much action this preseason doing it.

Yiu dont want CMC out there retuning them as your starting RB that your hC has already stated wants to give him 25-30 touches put of the backfield.

This Smith situation could end up becoming interesting

Why would Smith do this when he’s already got a signed contract?

Byrd making the team is dependent on if CAP makes the team over Barner.

If Barner makes the squad over CAP it'll be for his ability to play ST, rendering Byrd useless. If thats the case we have the ability to only carry 5 WRs and use that extra roster spot somewhere else

There is an actual possibility that we keep both & go with only 9 OL with ability of several members to play multiple positions.

I can't believe how many people are still hung up on cutting Smith. It's. Not. Gonna. Happen.

Yeah let Smith take up a roster spot for maybe two tds all year, that's smart. When we have a young guy like Bryd that can do returns and can play wr and score more tds. We have some dumb people on this site.

    • We should have drafted Isaiah Bond instead of Jimmy.
    • I don't want to give the appearance that I and the Nostrah Dumbass of this board because I miss a lot when trying to analyze talent, but I was all over Coker before the draft.  I wanted the Panthers to take him on day 3.  When he did not get drafted, I started banging the drum for him.  Apparently, they agreed.  (All Hail, MHS!! All Hail).  I also thought we should have drafted a DT (Marcel Dareus) over Cam Newton and give Clausen another year to develop.  (Boo, MHS!!!, Boo to you!!!)  All that to humble myself.   Coker is not blazing fast, but he runs good routes and has perhaps the best hands in the NFL.  I am tired of drops.  He is of high character---a guy you can support--unlike some of these other WR divas in the NFL.   Lock him up long term-I am guessing a deal in the $10m range (after yesterday) would not be out of the question.  He had around 400 yards this season, so let's keep yesterday as a good game and not a coming-out. We need a consistent deep threat, imo, an explosive WR with good hands.  Imagine that.  XL? Maybe its back to road kill and Dolla Bill.  Maybe this league was not meant for you.  Nothing wrong with giving it a shot, making some bank, and returning to your home.  Morgan?  Your worst move so far.  Learn from these "one hit wonders."
