NFL.com now says "completion percentage isn't everything" after Cam's 71% game.

Why does everyone get in a blind fit of rage when it comes to Cam? They’re clearly talking about our offense being inefficient...not Cam. That whole excerpt talked repeatedly about how Cam’s receivers let him down...there was nothing at all derogatory about Cam in that article.

Cam played well but many cam nut huggers here lol

No, but his mention about completion percentage was unwarranted. The media been pumping up his completion % bullshit and in a loss just had to mention it being irrelevant for whatever reason whether we lost or others didn't perform as well

And you can honestly say that if they DIDN’T mention his completion percentage whatsoever, that people wouldn’t be upset?? Then the narrative on here would be “Wow the media loves to criticize Cam’s completion percentage when it’s low, but now that he’s averaging ~70% in the first two games, CRICKETS”. That’s why you have to take what they’re saying in context. What they said in that article is a perfectly valid statement: they highlighted that Cam is completing a high percentage of his passes but saying that doesn’t necessarily correlate to an efficient offense. In the context of that statement, they said that the run game wasn’t working and that our receivers weren’t helping him out whatsoever. Yet somehow that equates to them hating on Cam...

Wouldn't you take that offensive performance every week?  It's a silly premise, the Panthers don't have a dependable running game, so the offense is designed around their best players/weapons.  It does correlate in the context of what they are doing offensively....they don't know what they're talking about.  The defense has issues and I don't see it getting any better anytime soon.  This isn't the Panthers D of a few years ago.

This offense is much better than years past, it gets the ball out of Cam's hands so he isn't as often target practice.  The offense was not the problem in this game...run defense (back up runner) and Falcon's wide ass open receivers.  When the offense and Cam are inept (which has been a problem), I'll be the first to the point the finger....but not this game.

  • Completion percentage is and has become the most conflated and overrated stat in football. Cam's game and the offense he was asked to execute most of his career never lent itself to a high completion percentage. He was always asked to throw intermediate to deep throws before last season, he was never going to be in the 65% range. But now, its hilarious that the media wants to change the narrative on Cam now that he is doing what they wanted him to do, but still finding a way to criticize him. Point blank, most people just dislike Cam Newton because he is having fun playing a kids game.

If you watched that game yesterday and thought that Cam was our problem, or the reason we lost, you are stupid.  Most days an offensive performance like that should get you a W.  Our defense and WR's (well, pass catchers) let us down big time yesterday.

    • I can't tell you what other's expect from him before they will start believing in him. I think for some, they will never be able to overcome his size. I think that is the fundemental problem for them which means they will never be happy with him behind center. For others, it seems he will have to be in the top 10% in pretty much every catagory and do that all seaon for them to start believing in him. Not everyone of course. There are people on this board that, while have doubts, can still acknowledge his good plays and are willing to give him another season. Those folks I would assume just want consistency - and wins. I could be off on all the above but that's kind of how I see it. And while you didn't ask, I will say I'm glad they picked up his 5th year option. He earned it. I do not think he should be signed to a long term contract yet. I do think he will develope in a franchise QB and will get the Panthers back into the playoffs and win them but I know I could be wrong. Next year will be the big test. If the offense continues to improve and they get back to the playoffs because of the offense, it will be time to sign him long term. If it's a repeat of this year, then it's time to look elsewhere for a QB. Like I said though, I believe he can be the guy so would be surprised if he doesn't make it.
    • Well since I am so biased, why don’t you tell us what he has to do to earn the trust of everyone that doubts him? If you say he has already done it, we really will never agree.
    • Also, do you think it a bit odd that the media has ignored it? Maybe they haven’t. But I am not aware of it being written or talked about.
