“Am I watching the same team as y’all” Part 2 (message for the homers edition)

After being told that “ALL the evidence” is against me I figured I’d go look at stats.

No one is saying Ron Rivera is the world’s worst coach (although he is close) but many people here believe he will not get this team over that final last hump.

Well to no ones surprise minus @Doc Holiday and @Rags the leaders of the “3-1 record” crowd, Ron Rivera’s record isn’t all that good (against the good teams).

I went back and looked at our record in each season against teams that made the playoffs THAT year.

Overall Ron is 15-24-1

2011: 1-6

2012: 2-3

2013: 3-2

2014: 1-4-1

2015: 4-0

2016: 0-5

2017: 4-4

I know the “homers” are going to immediately rule out his rookie year because it was his first season. They’re also the type that want to subtract the one bad outing from a pitchers record to help make the case for a CY Young award. Even so, you subtract a 1-6 record from his overall record and he’s still below .500 (14-18-1).

This is why many of us have grown tired with Rivera. Nothing ever seems to change and when it matters the most he’s often left looking lost.

This team has a ton of talent and we’re so close to where we want to end up, Rivera just isn’t the guy to take us there. The longer we wait the smaller that window gets...

So you're mad that Ron's teams haven't dominated playoff teams?

Jesus... I seriously have to spell this out for some of you...

Ron struggles against the good teams.

Which teams make the playoffs? The good ones. Which teams do we need to beat to win the super bowl? Playoff teams.

If he was even just .500 that would be “ok-ish” but he’s not even close.

I understand.

Did you look up every coach in the NFL to see how they do against playoff teams?  You know, so we can have some comparison?

I mean, to me, that's what makes good teams good.  They are harder to beat.  You know, we have been the hard playoff team to beat that fans of other teams bitch about.

Look at these same stats for every other coach in the league right now. Outside of Belichick I doubt many are much better than Ron.

@*FreeFua*

This is the real question. Not saying one way or the other, but until you compare other coaches' records against playoff teams, this isn't necessarily saying anything concrete. For all we know coaches with similar tenure have even worse records against playoff caliber teams. More data is needed.

I get what you’re saying and this was mainly for the ones who scream “3-1” every time someone says something negative about Ron. It was the same in 2015 when people brought up obvious issues with that team.

We should be past the point of just being happy with going to the playoffs. We have enough talent on this roster that should make going to the playoffs every season a given.

Coaching is a big part of this league. All these teams have talent. It just seems too often when we’re matched up against the better teams we fall short. The majority of that has to do with coaching.

I’m not going to go do this for other coaches so you can take these numbers with a grain of salt. I just thought it would be interesting to see what his numbers were like against the better teams each year as there’s a crowd of us who think Ron isn’t capable of getting us over that last “hump”

Mystery team since 2011's record vs playoff teams (regular season)

2011 - 5-1

2012 - 1-5

2013 - 2-3

2014 - 3-5

2015 - 0-6

2016 - 1-6

2017 - 5-5

Total in the same time span 17-31.  That team I just looked into was the Saints and no one claims that Payton is a bad coach.  FWIW, I don't think Payton is a great coach or a bad coach either, I think he's average.  I just think this is just more evidence that playoff teams are that for a reason, they are hard to beat.

This thread doesn't make any sense.

Playoff teams are playoff teams for a reason.  I strongly doubt this stat is any different for other teams aside from the Patriots and MAYBE Packers (teams with elite MVP Hall of Fame QBs).  Maybe the Seahawks too.  And that's only four teams.

We beat playoff teams in our good years and lose to playoff teams in our bad years.  It means nothing.

Ridiculous thread.

Not really...

2013 we were 12-4 and 3-2 against playoff teams during the regular season. We lost to SF in the playoffs a team in which we beat during the regular season.

2014 we were awful against playoff teams... beat a back up QB then went on to lose the next game.

2015 was 2015.

2017 we went .500 only to see us lose for a 3rd time in one season to the Saints.

Again, for the amount of talent on this roster we should be getting a lot more in return. This is people’s biggest gripe. Games like Sunday shouldn’t be so close and we shouldn’t need to rely on some lucky bounces.

I think this post and the majority of your other posts just proves it to me. Some fans love their team and want to see them to succeed so much that they critique it to the point where they look like haters more than fans. I understand where their frustrations are coming from, but you are NOT that kind of fan. You're the kind of fan that cares about being right more than the team being successful. A win is not enough for you unless they win the way that you want them to and any one that disagrees with you is a "homer" or they need your OPINION to be spelled out to them.

You act like it's a fact that Rivera is a bad coach and that the Panthers can't achieve their potential with him, but it's not, no matter how many cherry picked stats you bring up. You won't even back up your post by showing other coaches record's against playoff teams. These are just your OPINIONS, so please kindly stop trying to shove it down our throats. You're entitled to your beliefs but you aren't entitled to people agreeing with you.

    • I'm not a huge fan of BY, but he does have some clutchness developing
    • While you're correct, people are just sick of being told, "you don't understand this, you're dumb" despite what their eyes say. This applies to the Panthers and anything else in life. This board can be a miserable place, but this isn't the old days anymore because Social Media & Reddit have hijacked old-school forum users.  I have in the last year or so taken a massive step back from Social Media & Reddit. Deleted accounts on both, I only have X/Twitter now. But I was looking for an outlet for Panthers talk and I did not want to do that on X much at all. There are only two legitimate outlets for that I've found, here and SB Nation. SB Nation I used to partake in, but they absolutely bumble-f*cked the comments section, and I like the setup of the posts + comments, as opposed to article + comments. Also, as others have pointed out, being a Panthers fan has been a horrendous existence since Cam left. Just an awful crew of coaches, draft picks, trading away great players, etc. It's been miserable.  Ever since Tepper bought the team, I hoped that he commit to a full rebuild. He never did, he thought there were shortcuts and so did Rhule. This hamstrung us for years, and then he massively overstepped with the BY trade.  This ruined the team building, because there was no depth, and then it ruined nuanced BY discussions because of the insane haul we gave up. He will never live up to that, I think many people are finally wrapping their heads around that now which is good. The best thing for this board to get better is for the Panthers to win more, draft well, and to stay committed to crawling through this Andy Dufrense poop-pipe to escape the depths of NFL hell. It will be ugly and stink along the way, but you can see already this year if we commit to drafting then the team and the vibes can turn around quicker than you think.  I am extremely optimistic about the draft class this season, it's something to watch, talk about, and celebrate. It also gives Dan and I think by extension Dave Canales more of a leash, which I think we need to give them and grant them the time to turn this boat around.
