Lots of good value here.  I really want to take the LSU CB because DJack has me sold on their CBs, but I'm going with the Stanford Guard, Nate Herbig.

so with our first 4 picks, we got the DE we need, added two OL, a DT and a Safety.

I'm pretty happy here.

I like first-pick.com over FanSpeak, personally. I'm going to be on PTO during the holidays and have already made plans to watch Miami vs. Wisconsin. Excited to see Johnson + Jackson and the Wisconsin OL. I'm also excited to see some of the players in the Washington vs. Ohio St game, but will likely still be on the road traveling back down from the in-laws while it is on.

This is all assuming we address DL and S in Free Agency. It is also using Fanspeak's ratings/etc. I realize some of the people here likely slid too far, but meh. It is a first attempt.

White is a beast. If he comes out and is there, we need to get him as TD's replacement and Luke insurance.

Little, Benzshawel, and Bradbury could all come in and start on the OL day one.

Ridley has the pedigree and skill to be a solid WR.

Henderson is pretty much DWill 2.0, hopefully without all the drama.

Hodge is a sleeper for best ILB in this draft.

mock drafts now are so pointless

Actually, mock drafts at any time are technically pointless since none will have any actual effect on the draft.  They are for entertainment purposes only, and there is no set time in which we fans are allowed to be entertained.  They are fun, and when your team is essentially eliminated from playoff contention, they give us something to focus on and look forward to other than the misery of our season.

With that said, there is also a practical benefit for us to start looking at them now.  Many fans are not avid college football watchers, and many others mainly watch their favorite teams or conferences.  So, mock drafts and rankings give us an idea of some key players to research and become more familiar with that we may not have known about.  And starting this early also gives us a chance to see some of the players we haven't watched before play in their bowl game.  Basically, they help us become more informed fans.

To piggyback off of this, I like seeing the perspective of some of the more informed college football viewers here. There are plenty of prospects that I will overlook only to see a post advocating for them, become curious, and then become interested as well.

It's a fun hobby. Some people like to lose their family's home betting on football scores, some like to spend a couple of minutes of their day thinking about who they would like their football team to pick up and discuss it with other folks.

It's too early for this as mock draft "boards" will shift around a ton as NFL teams actually fully shift into draft evaluation mode and media types start hearing things about what the actual talent evaluators think, but I'll give it a shot anyway because why not...

Note before I even get started - I made this draft with the idea of shifting Moton to LT and re-signing Williams to play RT.

1/12: Clelin Ferrell - this is a no brainer. Based on our roster needs, if Ferrell is on the board this pick should be turned in within 60 seconds. He's a prototypical NFL DE in every way. A torn ACL in HS might be the only reason he would even have a chance of being available here.

2/12: Kendall Sheffield - yep, I just took a nickelback in the middle of the 2nd round. In today's NFL, your nickelback is essentially a starter and we need one badly. I would've rather had a safety here, there just weren't any that made sense. Not gonna lie, the fact that he's coming out of OSU played a role here. When you need NFL DBs, LSU and OSU have become 1a and 1b of where to look first.

3/11: Isaiah Buggs - let me just say it now that I don't think this guy is going to be available in the 3rd round. DL who get 9.5 sacks at Bama generally aren't. He's a tad undersized though and some teams may have him as a tweener. He might be coveted by 3-4 teams as a DE for them. I'm drafting him as a three technique and hoping he can be what Vernon Butler was supposed to be. If you want to beat me up for my 2nd round pick, just pretend these two are flip flopped then. LOL!

3/34: Riley Ridley - after letting Funchess walk, we're going to need another WR target with some size. Ridley isn't huge at 6'2" but historically speaking, that's still a pretty big WR (Moose was 6'2"). We're accustomed to watching huge WRs not play up to their size, but Ridley actually plays bigger than his size in the UGA games I've watched. Every time I've watched him the guy just comes down with the ball no matter what. This was a little earlier than I wanted to go WR, but I wasn't passing up Ridley. I also made this pick assuming that we're going to hire an aggressive offensive minded coach. I like Wright as a #3, but I like him a lot more as a #4.

4/12: Johnathan Abram - I wanted a safety earlier, but this was the first chance I had where one made sense based on who else was available. This is a bit of a boom or bust pick. He has prototypical size/speed, but when I've watched him play he takes a lot of bad angles. I think his issues are coachable. He isn't plug and play, but very few 4th rounders are.

5/12: Garrett Bradbury - this is our perfect developmental center while Larsen plays stop gap for a year. He has everything you want in an NFL center except for NFL level strength. He should be good to go after a year of living in the weight room and he'd be a steal in the 5th. If he performs better than expected in strength tests at the Combine he'll go earlier than this.

6/12: Demarcus Christmas - yes please. This is a guy the media might be sleeping on and we could see him rocket up mock draft boards when they start getting actual NFL talent evaluator feedback. He's not flashy. He doesn't rack up stats. But, he's an immovable object on the DL. The guy just eats up blocks.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got the Pinstripe Bowl on and watching Michael Deiter has me even more all in than I already was. Him and Beau Benzschawel are both leaping out, with Benzschawel being the more powerful of the two while Deiter looks to be the more athletic. I'm underwhelmed by the Wisconsin LT and can't help but feel like he is surviving simply because Deiter is so solid (similar to how Silatolu didn't appear inept between Gross-Kalil).

Also really liking what I'm seeing in Jaquan Johnson. He's got a pick, has been a willing tackler in run support, and has been fearless in squaring up and tackling TEs with technique rather than coming in like a missile.

Really, really liking both of these guys and feeling better about picking them. My original mock had Zach Allen in the 1st, but that was when I believed we might sneak into the playoffs rather than the top 10. If I believed one way, I can believe the other. I'm all in on Clellin Ferrell and Rashan Gary with our 1st pick.

Wouldn't mind Joe Jackson in the 3rd - 4th if he's there, but that's if we don't snatch Ferrell or Gary in the 1st + Deiter in the 2nd. I'd prefer Jaquan Johnson tho. Him and Gaulden developing behind Reid/Searcy would be good with me. I know that Reid functions better at SS, but in our defense we can get away with him at SS. Plus, him and Searcy can rotate over top while the young guns develop.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
