If the staff has been pushing Cam to play over the advice of medical professionals then they all need to be fired.  However . . .

My general impression is that Cam has, until now, wanted to play and told the staff he's fine.  Cam himself told us that the doctors can't actually find anything wrong.  I think (I hope) that Cam's press conference was him finally realizing that he is not the best option for the team at this point.

Yeah, I feel that Cam was saying he was ok and now it's sinking in that he can't.  It takes a lot for players to admit they may not be the best option on the field.

To me, this alone is enough to fire Rivera.  Rivera was putting this off on the doctors, and we have no idea what their diagnosis is.  Just like he puts losses off on coordinators and players.  Apparently, he makes bad decisions regarding personnel as well as game management decisions.  Remember in 2016 RR let Cam play hurt after we were eliminated.  No respect for RR.

He also let him stay in far too long in that Pittsburgh game this year with it well out of reach and after he saw that crushing hit on that surgically repaired shoulder.

Coaches can't go around 2nd guessing the teams doctors.

If he was cleared to play, then the coach isn't responsible.

I'd be more interested in knowing whether our doctors were passing the buck because Cam wanted to play, or whatever. Then we need to definitely fix that issue.

Cam is a warrior. If the doctors clear him, he's going to tell the couches he can play.  Sad it took this long for Cam to realize he wasn't helping the team.

This. They even questioning in the broadcast why was Cam still in there taking unnecessary hits when the game was out of reach.

Cam has stated that the medical staff has not told him it is getting better nor is it getting worse. If it were getting worse, I imagine they would shut him down. Otherwise, with a fraction of a chance of making the postseason, the coaching staff is probably trying to use that sliver as motivation and views shutting Cam down as shutting the season down. They want to finish strong to save their jobs.

I have soured on Rivera greatly this season. If he is retained, I'll be on edge but will give Tepper the benefit of the doubt. My only issue is that I have little to no confidence in available head coaching candidates out there. If he stays though, he HAS to run that defense. If he truly wants Eric Washington to learn, then show him by leading the team to a Super Bowl.

Cam will not ask to sit. Players are not programmed that way. He will keep going out there because he wants to play. Rivera wants to win. Somebody needs to step in at this point, even if it means circumventing Rivera.

Sounds like he’s just stubborn.

i mean how hard is it for a coach to witness whether a quarterback can make all the throws in practice or not and notice that he’s running to protect himself instead of running like Beast Modes daddy,..

you bench a guy when you see that,..

thats on Ron,...

The point of the player quoted in the OP is that PLAYERS WILL ALWAYS SAY THAT BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THEY DO.

Its up to the fugging ADULTS IN THE ROOM (i.e. coaches, upper management, medical staff) to start believing what they see with their own two fugging eyes what even a blind man can see:  Newton is HURT and DAMAGED.  Any asshole coach that watches Cam try to throw a pass like its a shot-put and can rationalize in their own mind "Oh... this is fine" should be fired with a quickness.

You "Well, Cam said he was OK!" people don't seem very smart.

Things should have never reached this point. Especially not with a head coach that has been at the helm for 8 years. Either Ron simply refuses to sit Cam, or he is that aloof that he just doesn't see the issue. Either way the result paints a bleak picture for the future. We have assets. We need a coaching staff with the awareness of how to use those assets, and also protect them if need be.
