Why do casual football fans blame Cam instead of Ron for this mess?

I usually wear a Panthers visor when Im out and I get asked all the time, "Oh, you're  a Panther fan, how do you feel about that Cam Newton."  Its crazy how the question and disdain is emphasized exactly the same every time.  I go ahead and list off all the QBs we went through before we were blessed with Cam and talk about all the great things hes done for us.  Then they change the subject from football.

dudes need to ask us how we feel about giving up a 60 yard bomb every game...

In real life I run into A LOT of fans who want to get rid of Cam, and I'm talking since his second season here. So it makes me wonder if a lot of the anti-Cam crowd is staying mostly silent on the Huddle.

During Cam's 1st season the Huddle was overrun by Auburn fans who signed up to support Cam. During draft time the majority of Huddlers wanted the Panthers to draft ANYONE but Cam. Some feared that Cam would be the next JaMarcus Russel, or that his rushing ability would be useless at the Pro level. I know because I argued against these fans. "That was COLLEGE" they'd say. Anyway the anti-Cam crowd ran smack into a hoard of newly signed up Auburn fans after the draft. Through attrition and Cam's good quality of play the anti-Cam fans faded into the background for the most part on the Huddle. This didn't happen out in the world. The anti-Cam fans are still up in arms outside of the Huddle in a major way.

I wanted the Panthers to draft Cam all along. A healthy Cam can win us a SB imo. That being said, it wasn't Ron who missed the game winning TD passes this season. Both Cam and Ron share the blame just like the rest of the team and coaching staff.

Casual fans only know what they see on the highlight reel, or lowlight reel depending on how things shake out. The don't know anything about Ron. They see Cam, and he's the hero or the scapegoat.

Not all things are black and white. When it comes to Cam he is black with no gray and no way to be white. Highlight wheel, supports the agenda and beliefs of the majority. It' not just racist prejudice, but prejudice within his own race. He is truly hated among all sides. So for me I give up defending him bc they will never see the truth, the truth hides from them.

Literally everyone I talk to IRL who only casually follows the NFL says the same poo: Cam has got to go and Ron isn't that bad. How do I deal with these people?

You could  photoshop "Panther OLine" onto a photo of subway turnstiles, carry the picture with you at all times, then, when you have that conversation, pull it out and say: Naah man, here's the real problem". This will either cause them to back away and leave you alone, or, open up  an in-depth conversation about the team. Win-win.

I’m guessing you were referring to me? GB fans overall are much smarter than the average panther fans. They are a publically owned team. I’m actually moving to Wisconsin before the summertime and after getting a feel for the fans around there the past ten trips I’ve made, they are more in tuned to the team and football in general. Huge UW football fans and Packer fans all over this state. Those fans know football and ice fishing.  North Carolina is a basketball state. Wisconsin is a football state.

And the media for the most part is national.

There is nothing on earth that will convince me that the headshots  he took in the SB and the subsequent season opener didn’t play a part in what were seeing now. I’d have to rewatch footage to get their names but there’s 4-5 members of that broncos squad that ought to be blacklisted from playing. They were spearing Cam in the head. You can’t tell me that didn’t contribute.

Maybe it's because most NFL analysts understand that Rivera is one of the best coaches available and he has been plagued with an injured franchise QB.  People loved Riverboat Ron when the bet worked, but now that his QB can't throw 20 yards, he sucks.  The problem is Cam is injured, that's the end of story.  If Cam is not going to recover, then we have to find a QB.

I love how people on here think they are serving caviar, when it's really just poo....

Because casual fans care about fantasy results and Cam isn’t doing much there..

Treat these people like you would treat a salesman trying to sell you a vacuum cleaner

Cam actually killed in in FF...last 2 weeks no...but other than that he was always top 5 QB.

That's funny as hell, but true.

I mean, I get that everyone has their own opinion---I really do---but from some of the b.s. tossed around the Huddle, I tend to think that it's getting to the point where the casual fan's opinions have just as much objective worth as some Huddlers' opinions. Huddlers are coming in with agendas like the best of them, and more concerned with seeing what they want to see, regardless, than any Facebook honk.

I don't think it's that simple.

Part of the problem is that so many want to go to one extreme or the other. Rivera is either the best coach in the NFL or a guy who sucks so badly he couldn't even coach a high school team. And people who ascribe to one of those two mindsets automatically assume that if you don't take their opinion, you must believe the other.

That's not true.

Me? I think Rivera is a good coach, but not good enough to win championships. That puts him in the company of guys like Dennis Green, Marty Schottenheimer, Sam Wyche and others who, while they left the game with good to great win-loss records, never won it all.

McCarthy won a ring, and Mike Tomlin has while Norv Turner as a head coach has not, and Ron Rivera has not.

I think earning an elusive championship has more to do with luck, and everything going your way than competence. I don't think McCarthy is more competent than say Norv Turner or Ron Rivera, or that Mike Tomlin is more competent than Ron Rivera ...

There is so much that goes into being able to win a ring as a coach that it isn't as simple as: "..hE hAs rInG, He gOoD. hE hAs nO RiNg, hE nO GoOd, AnD nOt gOoD eNoUgH tO wIn RiNg.."

Listen to Greg Olsen's latest interview on Panthers.com .. he speaks about how fluid things are in the NFL, and that while we are on a 7 game loss streak now, we're just a season removed from being an 11 win team. Olsen holds the exact opposite sentiments as you and many of the others here.

https://www.panthers.com/video/olsen-i-still-enjoy-playing-and-i-still-know-i-can-play

Wise words from Olsen. You can clearly tell he is against blowing anything up.

There are coaches who win rings because of a perfect storm. Guys like Gruden and Billick are examples.

There are also guys who win rings and then never return to that level. Winning is tough in the NFL. It takes a lot of work. That's why you have things such as Super Bowl hangovers, because after you've put in all the effort that it takes to win that championship, you're tired...for a while.

And then there's guys who just aren't good enough to win the whole thing. they might be good enough to win in the regular season and maybe even a playoff game or two, but they can't close the deal when it comes to a championship. So far, Andy Reid is that guy, and Ron Rivera is too.

Reid might get past that hump this year, or he might not.

I don't believe Ron Rivera ever will.

Meh, casual fans or observers of anything, sports or otherwise, know just enough to formulate an opinion but not enough to realize it is not based on anything but their own misunderstandings, limited knowledge (which is due to them being casual fans/observers), and biases.

I agree, Rivera is not that bad.  But the Pats losing to the Eagles last year by 8 (the last three being on a late fumble in the scramble to try and pull ahead) is not that bad.  Anybody think Belichick thought "not that bad" was good enough?  It just depends on what an organization really wants (what they will accept, everybody says they want to win the Super Bowl every year).

The difference is the upper crust of coaches can find a way to steal wins with in game adjustments or game plans devised for a particular opponent,  the guys like Schottenheimer, Green, and I would add Reid are going to win and lose in predictable fashion.  They are stabilizers, who can get a set number of wins (determined by how good they are at it) out of any roster.  I used to say, after he moved on, that John Fox could get 7-9 wins out of any team, whether it was the 2006 Lions or the 2007 Patriots.  Parcells could have been in that same group, but his teams were strong enough to do the predictable better than their opponents could prevent it.

Wyche, was an innovator who just happened to have the misfortune of capping off a potential championship season against the Walsh-coached, Montana-executed 49ers.  The Bengals game plan and execution was enough to win that game against almost any other team of the time.

Then you have Tom Coughlin, who fits the stabilizer pattern in every respect except the two playoff runs that netted Super Bowls with the Giants.  Even those game plans were predictable, it was just the execution was light years above what they had exhibited all year.

    • My father played Defensive End at Ohio State so naturally my kid is a huge Ohio State fan to go along with his being a huge Gamecock fan due to my ties to the school but last year he swore up and down we needed to draft Stroud number 1. I don't know if it was just being an Ohio State homer or what but he kept watching video after video of highlights and said Stroud was the future for us.  This past season he now claims we should have taken Rattler with one of our later round pics due to him saying he will be one of the huge steals of the draft and will be NFL ready within one season if it takes that. He said if Bryce busts completely we would have a future top QB to turn the team over to with Rattler taken in the fifth. From his prediction last year I'm starting to believe maybe they should hire him as a consultant for a few bucks a week. Hell, he is 13. They could pay him $50 a week for consulting and he would would think he is rich!
