Fired Bills assistants with Panther Connections

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Bills coach Sean McDermott is parting ways with three assistants who have Panther connections (and in two cases, stellar reputations).

OL Coach Juan Castillo is an old Rivera colleague from Philly and considered by many to be the best line coach in the league

WR Coach Terry Robiskie (famous also for a sideline scuffle with one of his receivers) is an old workmate of OC Norv Turner, and also well respected in the NFL.

Lastly, there's ST Coach Danny Crossman. As far as I know, he's not acquainted with Rivera.  And if you remember his time here, you probably hope it stays that way.

There's been no movement to date on the Panthers assistant coaching front, but if changes are to be made, Castillo is a guy I'd love to see brought in.  Robiskie maybe, though I think Lance Taylor's doing well and his connection to McCaffrey makes it unlikely he'd be replaced.  Robiskie could potentially do other things.  He's been an OC before so he could fit in a few different roles.

A note for the curious because his name has come up: Jim Bob Cooter has no connection to anyone on the Panthers staff that I know of.

Hell no to Crossman.

Wasn't Castillo the Eagles' DC once?

Yeah. That was a dumbass move by Andy Reid. He didn't suit that role at all.

He's a pretty fine OL coach though. And if I'm being honest, I'm not the biggest fan of John Matsko.

In Matsko's defense, he hasn't had a lot to work with in the past couple of years. We finished the season with one guy on the line who was a starter during training camp. And that guy just retired.

How much standing does a team that has Richard Rodgers as their defensive backs coach have to look down on anybody?

We finished one game better than the Bills this season, and that only because the Saints had nothing to play for in their final game..

With you on Matsko but we absolutely have to put more grade A talent on the OL.

Or just do a better job of managing what we have (i.e. not putting guys like Clark and Newhouse at LT above Taylor Moton).

Castillo is the guy I'd actually see having the best chance of latching on here because he and Rivera go way back. That said, I think Turner and Robiskie might actually go back even further.

The question with Robiskie is where to use him, but you've definitely got options. He's coached every offensive position except OL and QB. Heck, he's even been an OC and an interim head coach.

Taylor and Matsko are two assistant coaches I want to stay. Taylor seemed to do a good job with our young WRs and Matsko has been trying to make chicken salad out of chicken poo for years. He resurrected Oher's career, developed a UDFA into the highest paid OG in NFL history, developed a 4th rounder into an All-Pro RT, got half a season of solid play at LT out of Chris Clark, had second year Moton playing like one of the better OTs on the league. Matsko has done a great job with what he's had to work with.

Yeah let's go back to trash we let go. Great idea.

Castillo and Robiskie never coached for the Panthers.

I've always thought Matsko was overrated.  This year's OL didn't do anything to change that opinion.
