Colts drafted an “OG” from Auburn (Branden Smith) in the 2nd Round that Wally-Pip’ed all their RTs when after they got injured this season. (Smith was a high school OT and played it some at Auburn as well.)

Watching this current game, it seems like the "OG" that the Colts drafted that is playing at RT for them is pretty much dominating JJ Watt.

Agree

But when you can get a Stud DL while still getting a real good OG in the 3rd

Vs a Good OG in the first and Avg DL in the 3rd.

Listened to a interview with a scout awhile back.

They mentioned.  OL, besides your #1 OT in the draft.  The value slides obviously, but not that steep of a drop.  The difference kn the 1st round OG and 3rd round isnt that far off

DL on the other hand once it gets out of those top guys it drops off

The difference in a 1st round DL and a 3rd is equivalent to the difference in a 1st round interior OL and a 6th rounder.

While the difference in the 1st and 3rd round interior OL is just the difference in a 1st round guy and a 2nd round DL.

This is why teams think in terms of grades, not rank, when looking at players.

I'm a firm believer in that you have to consider the entire draft when making individual picks.  The goal should be to be right on multiple picks and to do that you have to look at the depth of talent at all of the positions.

You can almost work backwards, what position do you feel confident you can fill in the third round?  Figure that out and it can help you to determine what to do in the 1st and 2nd.

If someone in this draft is considered near far as possibly the best player in the entire draft regardless of position like Nelson was then yeah, I'd be on board with drafting them. At this point, is one gushed over like he was? Because if not, usually teams can get a really great OG outside of the first round.

Our best Guard in recent years was undrafted, so pointing to recent years really doesn't make a strong case for Guards being so valuable they deserve a first. Some are good, yeah, but pass rusher and offensive tackle seems harder to find

Norwell was a 1st team all-pro in 2017, Martín was 2nd team that year. Turner and Norwell were very good guards for multiple years. They and Kalil, when healthy, are the reason why we had a top 5 ranked OL in 2015, a great OL to finish the run in 2014 and a big reason why we finished 11-5 in 2015 despite the D having very few turnovers and having 0 WRs.

We are one of the teams that has had great guard play since 2014, until 2018 without Norwell. Guard is one of the positions of strengths for us for 4 out of the past 5 seasons and maybe had we not fired Gettleman could have been a strength again. We spent $19m this year on Smith, Cockrell, Poe and Searcy. We could have found a way to keep Norwell.

Norwell  might have been all-pro in 2017 , but even then that was a joke Martin was better. That's like Pro Football Focus has Elliott as their 29th ranked back for 2018. If we don't fix the o-line next year you might as well start looking for a QB but it's not fair to Cam to keep taking these shots. Look what the Colts did this year they would have not been back in the playoffs if they would have when d-line.

Yeah the only interior position that warrants a 1st round selection is Center.

Even then id be warry.

Kalil was drafted at the end of the 2nd at #59

The Bears stud Center was drafted at #56 2 years ago
