Bill Voth on Kaepernick and FA QB's

I’m not sure they're all that interested in any veteran quarterback right now. They clearly were intrigued by what they saw out of Kyle Allen at the end of 2018. Sign Kaepernick - or any veteran - and Allen’s reps go away. It’s long past time the Panthers try to develop a young arm. That road offers a higher ceiling than toying around with most of the available retreads.

Anyway, I can see an argument for both sides on Kaepernick, so I’m not going to scream one way or another. But as of today, I don’t see the Panthers pulling the trigger.

Exactly what I’m thinking...Kyle Allen showed promise...develop that guy and let him get the reps...at least there’s the possibility of him being a Warner/romo/delhomme type of unheralded guy that’s a gamer or a good solid back up...and at a price where we can address oline  and D. Everyone knows what Kaepernick is and isn’t at this point. Burn that 20 mil of cap and money on a backup QB...no thank you

If Kaepernick wants to play he can find a team somewhere else in the league because we are already set at starting QB and QB back-up with Kyle Allen.

If he wants to come, let him come

But its got to be the right price

He needs a prove it deal like Vick had in Philly, as he has been out of football the same amount of time.  And prior had injuries and struggled prior to this break

kaepernick was booty before any of this drama. why would ANYONE want to sign him after a few years away from football?

Because there are folks that will praise a man for where he stands on social issues even if he sucks at football. Just as there are those that will hate a man for where he stands on social issues even if he is good at football.

Kap in Carolina makes less sense than it does elsewhere or even anywhere at all. He had 1 maybe 2 decent years and that is about 5 years removed from 2019.

Can we we stop talking about this dude in a football context already?

    • Miller being less raw and more pro ready makes sense of why they picked him. With us having a capable starter in Walker the lower floor higher ceiling player makes sense for us as well. I agree with that.
    • I'm from Michigan and have had this discussion with my Lions friends, and they all agree with me, they were never going to take Freeling over Miller.  As, yes, you are correct, they could have left Sewell at RT and taken Freeling, but they are in a SB contention window right now. An OL with Freeling at LT and Sewell at RT is not as strong as Sewell at LT and Miller at RT would be for this upcoming season and likely at least next year as well. 5 years it could be looked back upon as a long term "mistake" to take Miller over Freeling, but for a franchise like the Lions, you can't worry about the long term when you have current SB aspirations.  It's all about maximizing their current SB window over the next 1-3 years. And it's not about style, it's about day 1 readiness, and a lot of "experts" aren't even sure if Freeling is ready to play Week 1 yet at the position he's used to, let alone switching to a side he hasn't played before, but a career starting RT is going to be more than ready to fill that role for them Week 1. I'm 100% convinced that if our draft positioning was swapped, we'd have still taken Freeling, they'd have still taken Miller, and both teams would have got the OT that they preferred due to what each team needs right now and what their current realistic aspirations are for the 2026 season. We're in a position where we can let our drafted OT sit and learn for a bit, they needed a week 1 starter, for me that's where this discussion becomes very easy to understand why each team took the player they did.
