NOT designating Capt as a post June 1 could be  a statement.

What if they are saving the 2 designations for

Kalil and..............................................................D. Poe.  Discuss.

I wouldn't be opposed to it. It's a strong DL draft. I've been saying all along that we have 4 picks in the first 3 rounds and I'd like to see an edge rusher and a DT with 2 of those picks. This is one of those great scenarios where the strength of the draft aligns well with our roster needs.

This is not a Post June 1st.  According to Panther Bill, you can only designate post June 1st cuts after the league new year in March.

Also, Shaq is not getting cut. He will be extended.

We wouldn't need to designate Shaq anyway. We could cut him and save all of that $9M+ right now.

I think Shaq is a fairly average NFL LB. I wouldn't be opposed to re-signing him at a market level contract, but I think having $9M in his pocket this season and us already showing our cards by announcing we're letting TD walk gives him a lot of leverage. Honestly, I would've preferred to give TD another season at $3-4M and just letting Shaq walk.

I was looking at Panthers cap hits next year on over the cap. The top 7?

Newton 23mill

Kuechly 17mill

Short 17mill

Kalil 12mill

Addison 10mill

Poe 9mill

Shaq 9 mill

At least 4 of that group were average-poor last season. Frankly it’s a miracle that we were even competitive last year. We have to get more production from our best. I just think Poe may escape due to a combination of being Hurney’s splash guy last year and a lack of picks to fill all the positions of need.

Eh, Shaq is pretty good and still developing.  He will probably sign an extension soon.  I

looks like the "Vets" are  getting cut.. the longest players are Keuchly, Newton, Gano, Olsen, Poe, Addison and Smith with Reid, Short behind them.

I’d be surprised if Smith wasn’t cut soon unless we are waiting until we bring in another outside WR to do it

It’s no shock that our secondary has been awful since we brought him two years ago.  He was an easy target on just about every play.

In Cap's defense, he wasn't the only hole in that piece of Swiss cheese we've been calling our defensive backfield.

He was our CB3 and often played in the slot. There was a time he'd automatically be lined up on the other team's slowest or possession receiver. Those days passed a couple of seasons back and he was often targeted as a mismatch. We often didn't either provide him with help or rotate the two better DBs into coverage against the better receivers when they moved to the slot.

I wish him luck out there and he'll find a home next season, I'm reasonably sure. He was a Panther and gave what he had out there. Can't blame him for that, but maybe there'll be a better fit for both him and the Panther's defense out there.
