Week 17 of last season...

We won a game and are still going to get a long time, high level contributor at #16.

I also believe that people that are pissy about not losing a game and picking 9th leave their empty shopping carts in parking spaces.

I sure didn’t want to win. That’s why I haven’t even watched the game. Wasn’t going to watch hoping they lost. It sucks we won.

But I don’t see how there is anyone to BLAME for this. A practice squad QB and hardly any CMC. It’s not like we put our best team out there. Problem was the game meant even less to NO. And you can’t throw football games. For any reason. Or at least get mad about players not fumbling.

It sux but I don’t blame anyone for it.

LOL, nice man =)

I'm over the game and the fallout.  I just don't care.  What I am tired about is it constantly being brought up.  We can't help it now.  We may as well just move on to FA and the draft.

I also agree with @Icege in that we're going to have the chance to pick a high level player regardless at #16.

Also, I enjoy the combine, but the underwear olympics don't define a prospect completely.  Look at DK Metcalf.  My son said he looked like he could be the Hulk.  Dude blew up in the explosion drills, but was a bottom tester in the agility drills.  Also, how was a mega talented dude like this a 3rd option on the Old Miss roster?  This is a viable concern that has been brought up by many talking heads.  Metcalf is an incredible athlete, and he makes me reconsider my carb intake...  But will he be a pro bowler in years 1-3?  Probably not.

So let's just enjoy the process and know that Hurney typically hits very well in Round 1 of the Draft.  I'm so tired of seeing the "We should of lost."

Yep! When we read the title, most of us knew what this thread was about.

My anger arises out of the 7 game slide that preceded this game and how long it took to make obvious moves. Then we win a garbage game and slide down the draft boards while keeping the two turds responsible for an embarising year. It's all of these things combined that makes me angry, the winning a toilet bowl game that was damn near given to us is just part of the disappointment.

Now that kind of blame I’m completely on board with. The mistakes were made long before that game.

Tanking the game was never a possibility and shouldn't have been. No team in the NFL would have purposely lost a game to improve their draft pick. This whole discussion was stupid to begin with and totally unrealistic. Anyone saying we should have lost on purpose have no clue what they are talking about. NFL players who got a shot to play were playing for their future. They weren't going to roll over. The whole notion is beyond stupid. So we can lament the draft placement all you want but only an uninformed casual fan who has never played competitive sports would ever advocate such a loser idea.

So if you blame anyone it was Newton's fault he was only injured enough to screw up his passing and caused up to drop in the draft. And how do you blame someone who is giving his all and trying to play despite significant pain. No there was little we could have done particularly when MRIs done at the time revealed little to no damage. Your anger is misplaced as you look to blame your usual scape goats.

That about sums it up. It was always a bankrupt notion that should be allowed to die alone, not resuscitated continually as a means to disparage the coach.

Move on to the now, and look towards the future.

For all those who wanted a loss, what team tanked this year? What team tanked any year? Been having the same discussions in the Falcons messageboard, for the same reason. Not one person has come up with a legitimate case of tanking.

If it's such a good idea, why don't teams do it all the time? I'll agree it makes sense on the surface, but , if there aren't any teams that do it, must not be as a good an idea as it seems.

I think there's a few reasons for that. One of the suggestions for tanking is the Colts the year they drafted Luck. Only problem with that? The GM and HC got fired after that season, they never got to benefit from having Luck on the team.  Very few coaches or GMs have enough job security to deliberately lose games. The folks complaining about the Falcons winning the last 3 games don't seem to realize that a 4 win season may have cost Quinn his job.

Then, the draft is such a crap shoot. Sure, if you suck and pick Peyton Manning, great, if you suck and pick Ryan Leaf, you're fired. Busts, even in the top ten, are so frequent that most teams aren't willing to risk it.

I also guess that Goodell quietly sends around a memo reminding teams that, if they obviously tank, he can take that high draft pick away. There's a rule about violating the integrity of the game that Goodell used when the Pats cheated for example, that could also be used  if a team obviously tanked.

You're correct that it was being brought up a lot, but that's because the Draft is approaching and everyone is reminded of that game when they look at our draft position.

That's why I expect it'll continue to be a topic until the draft is over. And for people who were hoping for a player that winds up out of our reach, probably even longer.

The Saints intentionally tanked that game to hurt the Panthers draft stock. If the Panthers could tank a meaningless game to hurt a division rivals draft position, they should. If the Panthers could tank a meaningless game to improve their own draft stock, they should. Do what's best for the team. Starting your 3rd string QB in a meaningless end of season game and going balls to the wall is some dumbass stuff. Hurt the Panthers draft position 8 spots. Could have traded back to 16 and gotten an extra pick in a LOADED draft. Dumb all around.

You could conceivably tank a single game, but even that wouldn't be easy.

Tanking multiple games would require the buy in of several people who would suffer negative consequences as a result.

I've never believed that tanking a season in the NFL was a realistic possibility.
