Barry Sanders Highlights

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I coached with Dwight Hollier, former UNC, Miami  Dolphin, and Indy Colt LB.  I asked him who he respected/dreaded playing the most.  He did not hesitate: "Barry Sanders."  He said he found himself in a situation where he was facing Barry in the open field.  He said he made the tackle.  I asked him to elaborate, and he said "He wasn't going through me, so I figured he had 2 options:  Left or right.  I guessed, and got lucky."

During Barry's playing days nike had this commercial which was praising accolades on him while cutting back and forth to him running in slow motion.

It's was like white on black text of

"For incredible athleticism..."

/slow motion running of barry

/cut back to

"And unbelievable precision..."

/slow motion running of barry

/cut back to

"We salute you...."

/someone managing to trip Barry sanders

/cut back to

"<random Defensive tackle> for stopping barry sanders

/random DT celebrating

It's the funniest sports commercial I've ever seen and it always stuck with me.

I'd argue that he was the last of the really really great RBs of the "old school" style. I remember watching him when I was young. He was soooo elusive, but they always tried to knock him for not being able to finish big runs. AFAIK he still probably holds the record for number of longest runs without a TD. Highlight and "follies" videos, back when VHS was still a thing, always made note of this.

Besides Sweetness, the far and above GOAT, I think Sanders is #2 on my list. He was magical.

To put it into Panthers perspective, I'd equate watching Barry Sanders play a single game to watching some of the things Smitty did in his entire career. It was amazing, and it was like age and wear never were a factor.

Take our worst blocking OL ever, put Barry Sanders behind it, and DeAngelo Willams, Deshaun Foster, and Jonathan Stewart combined would have looked like JAG compared to what Sanders could do.

Watched some old Earl Campbell highlights too. Always loved the one where would be tacklers are tearing his jersey to pieces but can't seem to stop him.

Campbell was in a minor auto accident some years back where a truck ran into him. He wasn't hurt. One news reporter joked that the truck was heard asking if anybody got the number of the guy that hit him :)
