Cam will be turning 30 this year.

Realistically, how much time does he have left with the Panthers? Assuming he signs with Carolina for the rest of his career?

At what point does the organization start to look for his replacement?

I think the days of "Grooming" a QB are long gone. You see more of the trial by fire now and it's really hit or miss but lately it's been working for several teams.

What say you?

It's a tough point imo, because if he can still play why would you look to replace him? At the same time, it's best to always be prepared.

At this point, finding a young QB2 that can develop behind him on a low cost rookie deal looks the most appealing. It doesn't create a controversy, it gets the position checked off, and if something does happen to Cam there's somebody who can try and bring the plane in for the landing.

A big telling point is going to be how negotiations for an extension go. If he's looking to go elsewhere, he can and will. If the team isn't willing to pay him, they need to be ready.

I'm not sold on the back up off the bench deal. Sure Rodgers was a back up but most teams draft guys in the top 5.

By next years draft we're going to have to make a move for a possible QB of the future to hopefully learn some things from Newton for however long he has left.

But I really chuckle at how eager people are about this, and how easy they think it's going to be. As if after watching a laundry list of bad teams wallow in misery, and failure for the last decade or more without a QB leads some to think that just won't happen to us at all in any way.

To me every other year or so a team with a franchise QB should invest a day 3 pick on the QB position. Reason being you get two years to eval and move on at minimal cost, but you keep churning the position looking.

Grooming QB's still exists, but MOST teams will not allow a threat to be on the roster unless they're internally ready to move on from the starter. (GB, KC, BAL) are some of the more recent examples of teams that had Franchise QB's (Favre, Smith, Flacco) but management was ready to move on.

I don't think we'll be at the point for a few more years Cam's health being the main factor, and it finally seems as if they ''get it'' now as the OL is finally getting some attention.

Agree with this.

I know Cam has run a lot in his career but he's been pretty damn good at not getting blasted and getting down early in recent years. Most of the lethal blows hes gotten were from him standing in the pocket.

30 isn't old for a QB and Cam looks after his health much better than a lot of other QBs do. I would say if Cam's shoulder is okay he could play well into his late 30s if he wants to.

Hard to say if I see Cam changing teams. Depends on how much he wants for his new contract, whether the team will be willing to pay that, and especially whether his shoulder is good this season to throw long passes again.

Ideally the Panthers would want to extend Cam during Summer 2020 I'd guess since 2020 season is the last one on his current contract.

    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
