For all the crap given Poe

Dontari Poe certainly had a disappointing season when juxtaposed against expectations when he was signed. I mean, the 66th best tackle (according to PFF) was not what we thought we were getting. That being said, PFF still graded his play as "above average." The man still is an effective space eater, had four tackles for loss, 17 tackles and a sack last season. You know whose grade was a little worse, as well as his stats at 17 tackles and one pass defensed? The man Poe replaced, Star Lotulelei. PFF graded him as "average," and even suggested that the Bills upgrade him by going after Sheldon Richardson earlier this off-season.

I guess that I say all this to say that I'd rather have Poe than Lotulelei. If nothing else, Poe gives off the demeanor as a guy that wants to improve, and with the players that he has flanking him, I wouldn't bet against him making a leap his second year in Charlotte.

I never saw Star not doing the same...

Perhaps it's just Star's way, but I questioned if he even wanted to be here from his initial presser, and honestly (in my opinion), he never really changed. I've heard others say something similar about him.

All that aside, I think that Poe was an upgrade, even if his season was disappointing.

Agreed. I was happy with the Star pick, and pairing him and Short with CJ/Hardy/Addison turned our defensive line into an elite unit in 2013.

I dont know if it was Short outshining him or what (although he never said anything publicly), but I never once got the impression he really liked it here.

He did come in and do his job professionally, but he also never seemed to want any part of being a leader.

He is well on his way to having a successful NFL career in terms of longevity and financially, but I dont think he ever had the drive to be a truly elite player

PFF defining space eater as tackle for loss, pressures and sacks? Poe and Star are not meant for those and never were. Well, except the tackles for loss or really just stopping the inside runs.

They’re on the team to demand attention. To be held up so they don’t collapse the pocket.

The true skill of star in KKs best year was his demand for a double team. He was double teamed nearly the whole damn season and KK and Luke were left to feast. If he was not double teamed the QB was not going to be stepping up in that pocket. That’s the definition of a space eater. Those double teams and eating blockers won’t be on stat sheets though.

Poe has not demanded anything since his time here. He’s been average and the defenses we have faced have focused on KK and Luke and it’s shown.

Star was never a ra ra guy. He was a soft spoken family man. I wouldn't question his effort though. He had some injuries below the knee that slowed him in recent years.

DTs their size don’t age well, usually. It was a desperate need and good pick that helped Luke tremendously. But most regress around second contract time. Which is why I don’t think Gettleman ever planned on extending him. And neither did Hurney. That contract BUF gave Star was ridiculous. Teams aren’t paying for run stopping NT types.

But this has nothing to do with Poe and just Star. There were some many options other than either player. Including whatever plan there was when we spent the same money on Breeland. There had to be something in mind.

I agree with you about Poe and we need to give him a better chance than we have thus far, however let’s steer clear of bashing Star... Him being out in 2014 (along with the commissioner’s exempt list nonsense) was the reason we lost to Seattle in the playoffs when I think despite our record we had a shot at it all that year. And he always played hard here and was an extraordinary teammate and player despite not having big numbers. I understand why we let him walk but I can’t say I don’t miss him a little bit.

The only reason I prefer Poe over star is the contract is 3 million less this year and you can cut Poe after this year with minimum impact. Star got more years before that happens. neither is living up to contracts, you can cut ties faster with Poe tho.

Star found what he was looking for... a payday on our farm team...the Buffalo Bills... he never aspired to be great..even after we took a chance on him when he was choking on his heart...  Donitari Ho should be embarrassed for getting  blowed off the line by 5yds consistently ....how does that happen, his ass is 4ft wide...

I get you, but I don't think I am bashing Star as much as pointing out that Poe was better. There were people suggesting that Star was better, and seemingly  in response to Poe's play. The stats and the grade refute that on its face. As for my thoughts on Star's demeanor, it's.nothing that hasn't been said before.

Star played with effort and was a professional here. Idk why he seemed to regress statistically here, but I don't think it was a lack of effort. Just the way it went. Maybe injuries to an extent.

But Star didn't seem to care about being here, which kinda sucked more than whether he was good or not. For a guy we were all so hyped on, he didn't leave a mark here at all, which is weird for someone of his talent. He doesn't make me mad, just makes me feel blank.

I'm not gonna expect much of Poe. Not sure if he can play at noticeably high level here anymore or not, but we just need a body who won't get pushed around. We've gotta hope McCoy brings some fire and KK gets back to producing.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
