Safety Market

Good lord you guys are venomous towards a guy who's just happy some of his peers are getting paid :eyeroll:

I'm not venomous toward him. Hell, I wouldn't even mind it of we brought him back. We have a need for safety help, at least on paper.

It's just that he definitely seems to be completely out of touch with HIS market value. Elite safeties getting paid well doesn't really have much of an impact on a veteran guy's value who is sitting at home as training camps open. The reality is that he's highly unlikely to get anything more than a one year prove it type deal that's a lot closer to veteran minimum than it is to these big deals getting inked.

Everyone concerned about Gaulden needs to relax--we were decent last year (6 wins in first 8 games) with a SS playing FS (Reid), and old man playing SS (Adams) who had lost 2 steps, a rookie CB, a decent CB, and Munnerlyn.

This year, Reid is where he should be, we should be much better at Nickel, one CB is no longer a rookie and the other is in a contract year.  Gaulden has been learning for a year, and if they did not like the progress, we would have drafted or signed a S.  However, even if he is bad, we will be better than in 2018.

The following guys still do not have a job and have a lot (in some cases to much) starting experience.

Darian Stewart

Glover Quinn

Johnathan Cyprien

Marcus Gilchrist

And thats before anyone is cut.  None of these guys are long term answers but any of them could be a short term solution if needed.

Remember when some people were losing their minds over the Reid contract? Looks pretty shrewd in hindsight. Safety market went HAM.

I think it’s a solid value deal for now and not too long so I’ll take that deal, but all the safeties getting paid big are field general guys who can cover, Reid is a box safety. I think I’d consider them two different kinds of markets. Like a NT compared to a pass rushing DT...

Best one this team has had is probably Minter. Coleman had that one good year because our front got pressure.

IMO, Minter and Grant are the best safeties we ever had and we didn't bother paying Grant to stick around. Mitchell might be the third and we didn't bother paying him either. I think it's well established that safety is pretty much at the bottom of our priority list. It is what it is.

Quinn has retired, sure he could unretire, but with the funds being low I doubt it. Cyprien is pure SS. Stewart had a few visits, but no one signed him. That normally means he wants too much or is rehabbing a injury. I do not know about Gilhrist.

Sad part is Panthers dont need 1 safety, they need two.

Stewart should still have some juice left. Another vet presence would be nice.

I disagree, but if you want to make that argument that's fine. In this scenario, we traded our 3rd best safety in franchise history for a LB who played one season appearing in three games and making two tackles before disappearing from the NFL forever. Oh wee mayne.

Eh....I mean Landon Collins is not an elite cover guy. He is definitely more of a box safety and he got a mega contract. Regardless, I still say the Reid deal looks pretty good at the moment.
