They need to cut bait with Brees after this year imo. Dead money hit for 2020 is 21 million. Goes to 5 million in 2021. Right at the time they can extend their stars like lattimore and kamara. Get a qb on a rookie contract. 2020 will be a rough year for them but it’ll come open after that.

They can't cut Brees after this year because 2020 was a voidable year built into the contract.  So he is a free agent after this year and will cost them 26 million if he is not on the team next year.  That does not get split over 2 years it all hits next year.  So either he retires and cost the Saints 26 million in cap space, he signs a new contract and cost whatever the first year hit is, or plays for another team and cost the Saints 26 million in cap space.  They kind of put themselves in a corner pushing all of his money back year after year.

In what world is MT not in the same conversation as Julio, AB, and Hopkins?

He's not. Those guys are all better players. Brees has a tendency to make players look better than they really are. Remember Jimmy Graham? He was never the same after leaving the Saints. Keep in mind he had 2 pretty good QB's in Wilson and Rodgers after Brees. Michael Thomas is a #1, but I don't see him as a top 5 WR.

He's probably the 3rd best WR in our division honestly. I got Julio and Evans above Thomas.

Michael Thomas had 97 more catches than any other WR on the Saints roster. When you are targeted that much he was bound to put up crazy numbers.

They weren’t even good numbers considering the large workload. 11 ypc is not dynamic at all compared to all the league’s top receivers. The only thing impressive was his catch rate and he certainly has good hands but that is more due to Brees and Payton putting him in a good easy position to get tons of catches and catchable targets.

Targeted that much? The only guy in the top 10 in catches with fewer targets was CMC, a RB lol. He’s targeted less than any top WR in the league, he just catches everything.

That dead money can be restructured again pushing it down the road but when you add up the new contract and parcel out the dead money, the cap hit would have to be 35 million plus. At some point you have to bite the bullet and absorb the hit

I didn’t mean cut like he was under contract for 2020. I just meant cut bait as in don’t resign him. My mistake. A couple of the websites I used had those figures 21 million for 2020 and 5 million for 2021 in dead cap space.

There’s so many guys you could make an argument for man. I think most lists would have him somewhere between 3-8.

yea for sure, I think MT is one of the most complete. He has no weaknesses, but other guys have bigger play potential. Not that my two pennies matter, but I have Hill as the most dominant in the game, he does things no other guys can do. Then you have AB, JJ, Hop and I think MT is right there after those guys along with Adams and Odell(very inconsistent and a headcase) and AJ(when healthy of course). So 3-8 is fair and it's fair for Saints fans to believe he is the best. With the cap increases going like they are, MT's deal will be considered team-friendly in a couple years. The 8 guys I listed would be the "elite ones" in my very unimportant opinion but AJ is falling out because of his ability to stay off the field.

    • see we are just not going to agree - unless you change your mind lol. Mine isn’t changing without hard evidence that Morgan supported it like a puppy dog.  He was the assistant. If he disagreed and said so, and they didn’t listen, he has to pick his battles. If he continued to oppose he is looking for work. He knows this stuff. I think he knows Bryce is a super long shot just because he faced NFL QBs and probably would have salivated at the thought of Bryce on the other side in his playing days.  Anyway I am going to judge him on what he has done since he’s been the man with the title.  I also would bet a stack that there were conditions placed on him and on Canales re Bryce Young. Can’t prove it. I am not supporting the Brooks pick, and rationalizing the XL pick. And rationalizing the Brooks pick to an extent, on the (assumed by me) mandate that was a condition of the hiring. Which was ‘sell out’ to make Bryce work. This year. Now. (2024) That is what those top two picks were.  IMO. They failed, id judged today.  I think Morgan is doing a great job really, once he got his feet under him and was allowed to do his job.  Fixing this team while accommodating Tepper/Bryce, more than a two year fix.    Anyhow I have beer to drink will check back later.
    • Dolphins pass rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips: The Dolphins have received trade interest for both players, but could have an easier time trading Matthew Judon due to his more affordable contract
    • Saints WRs Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed: While the Saints have maintained they don't want to trade their wide receivers, other teams are still monitoring their availability.
