3-4 will kill us

Uhh was everybody watching Sony Michel juke the absolute fug out of our defense? Because that was the main issue, not gap assignments or getting blocked out of gaps. But tackling.

The only thing I’m truly worried about on defense is ILB depth. If Luke or shaq go down we don’t have the backups to come in and make plays. They will get abused.

I was so excited to see Boston back after him putting 2 good seasons with other team.

But that tackling effort on Michel gave me flash backs to that Atlanta game a few years back where he whiffed everything including taking (I believe Bradberry) completely out of a play allowing a long run

The 34 is a bit of a problem. You’re taking some of your best players and neutralizing their strengths. McCoy and Short are not natural fits for this. Kuechly is not a natural fit for this.

I’m not saying I hate the idea. I think this becomes more of a situational look. Takes time to build a traditional 34. And there will be growing pains.

Hmmm... I’m pretty sure someone around here said it would take multiple seasons before we would have a good 3-4 defense. You don’t go from a 4-3 to a 3-4 hybrid and expect everyone to become HOFers. This is why I expect Ron to keep his job no matter how bad we suck this year

Not sure you meant this, but you’re onto something.

Corrected:

3-4, 4-3 with the same coaching getting the same results. I hope that we can get it together and perform in regular season but our dress rehearsal was garbage...

We have 3 pro bowl NT.  The issue is scheme.

The pro bowl season for Poe was 5 years ago. He has been pretty awful the last 3 seasons. I don't know what other pro bowl NTs you are referring to on our team.

The NT has to be a space eater and command double teams. Poe is only getting blocked by 1 lineman and getting pushed backwards 5 yards, many times into our LBs...

I wish we had prime Vince Wolfork or Pat Williams, but we don't...

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
