Need to buy SUV by end of the year

I have 4 kids so I need something with 3rd row.  My budget is about $55k tops.  I need an SUV that will last 10 or more years. I was thinking Volvo XC90 or Ford Explorer.  I’m not sure how reliable explorers are thought.  Any recommendations? I currently have 12 year old Toyota and I love it to death but unfortunately no room for new baby and I’m not big on Highlander’s.  I think they are overpriced.

Can't speak for the long haul but I got a 2017 Ford Edge Sport ( 2row vs the 3 on the Exp) with the 2.7 Eco

I was impressed with the Eco engine on a lot of my buddy's F-150's, but I needed more of a family vehicle when it was offered on the Edge I got one I liked the styling of the redesigned Edge at the time vs the Explorer.

2yr 20k mi & no problems.

If you are thinking long term, you need to cross off any European SUV's.  Volvo's ain't what they used to be.

I would keep it simple and go with a Sequoia, Explorer, or Expedition.

Buy a Volvo and you'll regret it for a decade, maybe more. They aren't the same as they were when they were owned by the Swedes. Since then they've been bought and released from the Ford family (with the inherent drop in quality) only to now be owned by Chinese firm Geely... you can imagine how that is going to impact quality.

Ford, all I can say is that in the first 30 years of my life I owned seven Fords (three Thunderbirds, two Mustangs, an Escort and a Bronco II). I was only a driver for 14 of those years... I've owned one car since then, a 2001 Mitsubish Montero LTD that still runs like a top. I bought it brand new off the lot and just take care of basic maintenance, I'm not a mechanic kinda guy.

My wife's prior car was a 26-year old Camry she bought new off the lot back in the day and we ended up giving it away to a family in need... it still ran great but we'd snagged a new Toyota Sienna minivan to haul the kids around in (and man that is a great car).

Go with a Japanese brand for the SUV and whether it is built there or here in the US, the quality will be great and you'll still be breaking it in at 200,000 miles. The interior will still look good, too (Ford interiors go to crap about the time you make that last car payment).

And whatever you do, avoid Land Rovers built after 1976. They were never built to be run without a ton of tinkering, but they completely lost their cool factor around the mid-70s.

Toyota Sequoia if you can find it will be great, but those Highlanders have a ton of room and drive really well.

we have an Explorer now.  I don't really like it. Zero problems w/ it though.   I mean it has been a lot more reliable than some others we have had.  But the 3rd row really isn't a 3rd row.   Doesn't drive nice.  I don't like the transition they made away from the truck frame.

I personally am going back to Toyota when this one is done.

    • Pretty sure Tepper wanted BY regardless of the coach. Unfortunately for Panthers fans. I am confident Reich did not want BY.
    • But they went with a smile… and some acid reflux.
    • Prediction? We likely lose.  Maybe look okay doing it.  It could be different with some turnovers coming to us.   In general I don’t have the same faith in what we will get from Andy that I had in the week three games of the two previous years.   I was very confident as to what we would see last year vs the Raiders and was validated.  The patchwork OL worries me, in pass pro, with him being old and creaky and not exactly being ‘cat like’ in his escapability. And somewhat concerned about his arm strength. I mean in general, I think he could still be ‘as good once as he ever was’ which is a huge upgrade from Bryce.   But it is still another year of aging and at some point it’s over… people say it is for him, I haven’t seen enough of him this season to say otherwise.  Add the fact that they are generally a more seasoned and tested team than we are, players to staff. I am skeptical. But that is why they play the games, we don’t know for sure.
