Done with Rivera and Cam

NAS

Recommended Posts

I waited two days before writing this so to ensure that it wasn’t just another reactionary thread.

In short, I am done with Rivera as a coach. He was riding Cam for so long and now that Cam is no longer the same player his lack of coaching ability has been completely exposed.

I am done with Cam, not because he can’t run or throw like he used to, but because he doesn’t seem to have the same attitude, swagger, heart / passion for football. He seems more concerned than ever about fashion (if that’s what you want to call it), than about winning. After a game in which his offense stinks (not all his fault), he still comes out dressed like Aunt Jemima. Sure he took responsibility, blah blah blah, but excuses have been played out.   I have been the biggest Cam defender but I think it’s time to move on.  Rivera is a given, it’s amazing he has somehow lasted this long. Not sure yet about Hurney,

I will still watch the games but in a resigned state of apathy, ready for a new offseason and new beginnings.

I'm done with Rivera, but not Cam. I still have hope that he'll get things going again.

But sadly, Cam's job is about to be on the line very soon.

I said it before and I'll say it again, he needs to cut the vegan crap. Humans need meat. Cam needs to be eating some high quality, wild caught salmon. Gotta get him some of that omega-3. He's got some football brain fog going on and needs clarity.

So was his fashion sense a problem in 2015 ?, or any other time the Panthers made the playoffs ? Did he not care in 2015,16,17,18 when he made his fashion statements?. One thing we know is that win or lose Cam always dresses up. Its a consistent thing, so how is it a problem now when it wasn't a problem before ? I don't get that thinking and this is one of the reason Fandom is crazy. When your favorite team is losing you hate everything about the player that is playing poorly and you start questioning everything about them and emotion always get the best of people. Fandom is like when your girlfriend piss you off and you start saying things you don't mean or is not true to make your girlfriend feel the same way you feel.

The obvious thing is Cam is still hurt and his ankle and shoulder is not 100 percent. Why is there no design runs for him ? Why does he like slow when he scrambles ?. Cam never been accurate like top tier QB so now that he has a new throwing motion that he is trying out for the first time in live action and he's coming off a 2nd shoulder surgery theres no wonder why he can't hit receivers. His play has been going down hill not because he doesn't care but because he body is breaking down. Carolina needs to move on from Cam and let him get a fresh start and get healthy elsewhere. They need to clean house and start a new era.

I think any reasonable person assessing the situation knows Rivera isn’t leading the Panthers to the promise land. It’s almost an absolute certainty he’s not doing it without an MVP-level Cam, and we can probably all agree, at best that MVP-level Cam isn’t coming back.

One take could be that we need a new coach to maximize Cam’s remaining abilities (and weapons), instead of a Cam needing to mask Rivera’s deficiencies. But after years of being tied to Rivera, getting hurt repeatedly to key limbs, going vegan, changing the throwing motion, not running, joining the Slavic bag ladies fashion club.... do we really expect another major adjustment from Cam at this stage of his career? At 30? With a huge contract? Unfortunately, we wasted his prime by allowing Rivera’s mediocrity to remain in place too long. It would be difficult for a new coach to tie himself to someone with that tread and not very accurate.

Rivera and Cam’s destinies are tied to each other. The organization tied them. So it’s difficult to part ways with Cam, but our offensive weapons are young. I think it’s unfortunately a 2-yr build and anyone over 25-26 not named Luke should be expendable.

We can see how the next 6 go, but unless we’re enamored with the QBs in the draft, I start looking at how much draft capital we can collect and invest in the OL and a TE, give Grier some time. And with Jason Garrett possibly being safe if Dallas performs, I tell Tepper to back the truck up for Lincoln Riley and we look for his ideal QB in the next year or two.

It all sounds crazy after game 2, but we’re built on shaky ground with these two. So we can either prolong the mediocrity at best and tie ourselves to it for more years, or start the process early.

I ain't mad, but I would like to point out one thing.

People are always saying Rivera rode Cam's coattails, blah blah blah. The fact is, coaches let their play making QBs do what they do.

Rivera certainly has his deficiencies. My hugest gripe with him (other than his normal stuff like clock management---but I can get over the other stuff) has been his unwillingness to pull vets when they continually look like poo. He's never had the gumption to say, "Hey, you don't have it, I'm going to see if [so and so] can't bring something different!"

Now, I know it may be controversial, or perhaps even existential to his head coaching career, but I'd have had more respect for him if he pulled the vets on a consistent basis when they're playing like poo, or just can't seem to get it done. Like in McCaffrey's case, he should have at least brought Scarlett in a few times. Change of pace, means change of pace for a reason. Cam was pretty much stinking up the joint, and has been playing---really---uninspired for a while now, if you want to tell the truth about it. Bring in the backup and see if he can switch things up. People say Rivera's been riding Cam's coattails. Now, ironically, he's gonna ride Cam's coattails right off a cliff.

Rivera needs to have a come-to-Jesus moment If he's going to save himself. They all do (Cam, Norv, Scott, Hurndawg)! I mean, if the status quo remains, we know how it's going to end anyway.

Just as John Fox was tied to Jake , Rivera is tied to Cam  .Tepper will probably see how the season plays out to make some changes .  I like Cam and Rivera as I did Jake and Foxy , but the NFL  teams have figured them out .  We don't need to waste CMC   and others  just to watch  this dumpster fire ,

Man please this line has been piss poor just about the entire time Cams been here. If he cared he would have gotten Cam a line and Wrs way before now. Calling Ginn and older Steve Smith weapons is laughable. Saying I would have took that shot too by your coach is pitiful for a guy to care about his talent you take care of it . U value it. That's the problem he didn't value Cam at all. Bc he didn't have to. He knew CAM would give his all no matter what. The only thing Ron did was use CAM as sacrificial  lamb to the NFL. Have your way with him, but spare me.

It’s been obvious for quite some time that the Panthers win despite having Ron as a coach. He’s great with the players, he knows defense and he still has their respect but he just isn’t HC material. I would be ok with seeing him replaced after the year, win or lose.

As far as Cam goes, I’m really freaking tired of hearing about how he dresses after a loss. I guess he’s supposed to take two sets of clothes to the stadium with him... one set for if they win and one set for if they lose... gimme a freaking break.

And if you say that Cam has been nothing but average his entire career you’re a moron and no nothing about football.

    • This is always a non-story by the time camp begins.
    • I've really only begun to pay attention this week being that training camp is looming, so I was personally caught off guard by the fact that Nic Scourton remains unsigned. That's not necessarily bad news, but it's not necessarily good news either. Apparently it's a thing with this year's draft class. "Of the 32 players selected in the second-round, 30 remained unsigned and the clock is ticking. "Already we've seen one second-round pick hold out from the start of training camp with that player being Los Angeles Chargers' wide receiver Tre Harris. Harris did not report with the rest of the Chargers' rookies on Saturday due to his contract situation, a issue that could impact nearly every other team in the league. "For the Panthers, defensive end Nic Scourton is the player to watch for when rookies start showing back up to the team facilities next week. "The 51st overall pick is one of the 30 second-rounders who has yet to sign their rookie contract and the reason why is due to the other two that have actually signed. "Cleveland Browns' linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Houston Texans' wide receiver Jayden Higgins each signed fully guaranteed contracts as the first and second players drafted in the second-round. Prior to this year, second-round picks never received a fully guaranteed deal, only players selected in the first-round." https://atozsports.com/nfl/carolina-panthers-news/panthers-nic-scourton-contract-second-round-pick-training-camp-hold-out-tre-harris/ So, I suppose we'll see what's what pretty soon. It's definitely something to monitor.
    • overwhelming majority of kids in travel ball aren't getting scholarships though because most teams are rec caliber (and not watched by scouts)    and parents/leagues sort of helped create this system and narrative IMO where travel ball is now oversaturated and most of it is simply expensive rec ball.  is travel beneficial for some athletes to get more exposure? Sure. The ones travel actually existed for.   I still think travel has expanded entirely too broad at this stage......where they will now have 5 teams per year in your backyard area pending they can get parents to write those checks.   Ain't no scout ever laying eyes on 90%+ of the kids in travel ball at this stage of where it has morphed into.
